Hohn is the chief executive officer and managing partner of TCI Fund Management, the world's best-performing large hedge fund in 2019. The London-based company was founded by Hohn in 2003 and invests in a limited amount of long-term, owner-oriented assets. TCI has about $44 billion in assets under management.
The majority of Hohn's net worth is derived from TCI Fund Management, the investment firm he founded. TCI managed about $57 billion at the beginning of 2024.
His $8 billion of personal investments in TCI are based on the $6.75 billion he had invested with the firm at the beginning of 2022 and earnings over the following two years, according to Bloomberg calculations. This figure was updated in April 2024 to account for $3.4 billion in calculated earnings in 2024, leading to a $2.6 billion gain in his fortune after accounting for taxes.
The business is valued using the company's most recent financial results and the average enterprise value-to-sales ratio of publicly traded hedge funds Janus Henderson Group and Man Group. A 25% key-man risk discount is applied.
Hohn was born in Alderstone, England in 1966. His father was a Jamaican-born car mechanic and his mother an administrative worker.
He studied at the University of Southampton before being encouraged to apply to Harvard Business School where he obtained an MBA.
After 7 years working for New York-based Perry Capital, Hohn returned to London in 2003 where he opened his own hedge fund, The Children's Investment Fund.
TCI's investments have included stakes in Deutsche Boerse, ABN Amro and News Corp.
He received a knighthood for services to philanthropy in 2014. Hohn's donated personally and through his foundation to activist group Extinction Rebellion.
