Hello,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community and providing us with the detailed description about the issue.

As per the description, I understand that you are experiencing issue with Windows 10 external monitor not working on the system.

I certainly understand your concern and will try my best to help you.

There is a possibility that this issue might have occurred due to the “hardware and software changes” or the “video port” that might have gone corrupt.

I would suggest you to follow the methods and check if it resolves the issue.

Method 1:

Run inbuilt Hardware & Device troubleshooter

Let’s try running inbuilt Hardware and Devices troubleshooter to get the problem automatically detected and fixed. It checks for common issues and makes sure that any new device or hardware attached to your computer was installed correctly.

  1. Press Windows + W keys on your keyboard to get the search option.

  2. Type Troubleshooting and click Troubleshooting.

  3. Now click on view all option.

  4. Click on Hardware and Device and follow the prompts to run the troubleshooter.

If the issue persists, follow method 2.

Method 2:

I would suggest you to refer to the suggestions provided by “David F” replied on October 8, 2010 in the following Microsoft Community link given below and check if that helps.

No signal found by monitor for HDMI or DVI. Monitor finds VGA signal just fine.

Also, I would suggest you to download the device drivers in the system and check if that helps.

The above steps holds good for Windows 10 as well.

Hi I also wanted to use an external monitor and when i clicked on custom display it did not find it. Then all of a sudden the 2nd monitor stared up. I then got the screen asking how i wanted to use the monitor. All OK now. Not sure what I did.

My machine was a brand new ASUS Zenbook UX305 with windows 8. After plugging in windows 10 downloaded all ok.

Sorry I dont have an answer on what actually happened within the lap top to make the screen work.

Hello,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community and providing us with the detailed description about the issue.

I certainly understand your concern and will try my best to help you.

Yes, you can try Startup Repair if the issue persists.

I would suggest you to perform a “Startup Repair” using Windows 10 bootable DVD or USB drive and check if that helps. Initiating repair from CD/DVD may have different results than earlier since the source of boot is different now.

So, I would suggest to perform the repair again and check if it helps.

If you don’t have the bootable DVD or USB drive, please refer to the steps in the article given below to create one and then follow the steps given below.

Create installation media for Windows 10

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Once you have made the bootable USB or DVD drive, please follow the steps.

  1. Insert the installation DVD or USB and boot Windows 10 from it.

  2. In the ‘Windows setup’ page, select thelanguage to install’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.

  3. Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.

  4. Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select‘Automatic Repair’ and select the operating system.

You might also require to change the boot priority in BIOS in order to allow the computer to boot from CD/DVD.

Important: While scanning the hard drive if any bad sectors are found, the scanner tries to repair that sector, any data available on that might be lost.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Hi Rena,

As your external monitor is not detected nor the one with the laptop, we would suggest you to contact the Laptop manufacturer for further assistance as we can't do troubleshooting on the black screen or without screen.

Thank you.
