- Kelly BIowa5,157 contributionsI walked up from the riverfront (and walked there from the train station), passing through Kirshgarten along the way. It is uphill, but very doable.
There was an organ recital going on when I got there, which drew in a big crowd. It was neat to hear the organ. After that was over, I walked around looking at the stained glass windows. They are stunningly beautiful
It’s free to enter. It doesn’t take long to visit; the windows are the main thing.Written October 23, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The market outside was very extensive, and the cafes were all of a high standard and good value for money, and as everything in germany was very clean.Written May 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - periandroLuxembourg City, Luxembourg9,852 contributionsThe Gutenberg Museum in Mainz is one of the oldest museums of printings in the whole world. The building regarding that Museum is called “Zum Römischen Kaiser”. It's a beautiful renaissance edifice lying close to the cathedral in the old part of the city, whose façade is fabulous. The name of the Museum derives from that of Johannes Gutenberg, the intellectual who invented the movable metal type printing press in Europe.
The Museum houses an interesting collection of books, apparatus and machines which constitute the most interesting items there exhibited. Likewise, it includes an extensive collection of printed graphics encompassing depictions of printers and technical illustrations as well as artists' prints appertaining to diverse techniques.
It can be deemed that among the most valuable treasures of the Museum the Gutenberg Bibles are in a predominant position. The Gutenberg Bible, known as the Shuckburg Bible, in two volumes and two block books is a precious masterpiece. It was printed using wooden forms, technique which is extremely rare nowadays. The replica of Gutenberg printing press is an element of great interest. Besides, the reconstruction of Gutenberg's workshop is a fantastic art work and one of the Museum's main attractions.
Taking thus the high interest and importance of all the items which can be observed in the Museum into consideration, it's clearly the most significant place in Mainz whose visit cannot be missed while in the said city.Written April 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There was a farmers market going on, a beer garden, and wine drinking section. Lots of people milling around. I was surprised to see a patch of wildflowers blooming in the midst of the Markt. There’s also some great views of the surrounding historic buildings.Written October 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - WriterJaneNew York74 contributionsYes, there's an ancient temple in a downtown Mainz shopping mall! It's free, with printed documents in multiple languages. Also, the guide when I was there went through all the exhibits in English with me -- for free!Written December 31, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kelly BIowa5,157 contributionsA small neighborhood with timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and a feeling of medieval Germany. Great photo ops. Several shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s also pretty close walking distance to several other must-see sights of Mainz. I walked through it on the way to see St. Stephan’s Church.Written October 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kelly BIowa5,157 contributionsI’m kind of surprised that this isn’t the number one ranked church in Mainz. I thought that the interior was absolutely stunning. Done in an elaborate baroque style, I hardly knew where to look first. The ceilings, walls, balcony, just everything is decorated. It’s an easy walk from the Mainz Cathedral . Although it’s much smaller than that cathedral, it’s beautiful.Written October 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - dese2Auburn, NY3,084 contributionsWhat an excellent museum! It was a bit off the beaten path but within walking distance of where our ship was docked - it took us 18 minutes to walk there.
The museum was free, we wore a mask and had to present our vaccination card. There are restrooms and a small store with books but mostly things for children; some postcards.
The displays were fascinating to me and the story of the recovery of the ships is also fascinating.
There is still work being done and you could see into the workshop.
I am so glad we took time to visit. I suggest you go too.Written November 15, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This is the home ground for FC Mainz 05. We had previously bought two tickets online for the princely sum of 12,00€ each. We drove down from the north of North Rhein Westphalia and we were directed to the area for the away fans (in our case supporting Bayer 04 Leverkusen). We were thrilled to be sent to a car park area exactly next to the stadium for the fee of 5,00€. Incredibly good value.
Having negotiated the COVID and other normal security checks we found our way to our block easily enough. The stadium is quite new, has good facilities including decent washrooms, a snack bar (try the spicy Feuerwurst) and terraces where we had a decent view over the whole pitch.
We were warned that the gates at the exit at the end of the game would only open 30 minutes after the final whistle. But that wasn't a problem for us.
All in all an excellent stadium where we, as away team fans, were treated extremely well. Well, we did lose after all... Thanks!Written February 19, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The outside of the church is intriguing with its double tower, but I was completely unprepared for what lay inside. Stunning ornamentation!! The artistry of the paintings, the plasterwork, frescoes, the gold and ebony everywhere. Breath-taking. And very few people there the morning I went in...I think it is overshadowed by the Dom and other churches. So worth a stop on your walking tour of Mainz.Written June 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- jesuscps0Navalvillar de Pela, Spain47 contributionsThe museum is great and other users explain better than me. I can add, our experience with kids. In a lot of rooms had some staff to explain and to entretain the kids while the adults can see some parts of the rooms. Finally the kids had a rooms that tehy can draw, dress, play withdiffernt activities that help us to explain and interactuate with the children.Written October 14, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
