Who is Cree Summer?

Canadian-American actress and singer Cree Summer Francks was born in Los Angeles, California USA, on 7 July 1969, meaning that her zodiac sign Cancer. She’s had roles in over 350 movies and TV series, but is perhaps still best known for her voicing of Princess Kida in the 2001 animated action adventure movie “Atlantis: The Lost Empire”, directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, and which starred Michael J. Fox, Jim Varney and Corey Burton. It follows linguist Milo Thatch and a group of explorers as they’re searching for Atlantis – the movie won two of its 16 award nominations.

Education and early life

Cree was raised in Red Pheasant Reserve in Saskatchewan (Canada) by her African-American mother Lili Clark who was a housewife, and Canadian father Don Francks, who was a famous actor and musician; Cree’s brother is Rainbow Sun Francks, a successful actor and model.

Cree became interested in acting at the age of seven, having looked up to her father and admired his acting skills; she was 14 when she launched her career, cast to voice Penny in the popular animated action adventure series “Inspector Gadget”, created by Jean Chalopin and Andy Heyward, and which starred Don Adams, Holly Berger and Frank Welker. It follows a police inspector as he’s solving crimes with the help of his niece and dog; the series aired from 1983 to 1986 and was nominated for only a single award.

Cree continued acting while attending a local high school, and upon matriculating in 1987, chose to focus on her career rather than pursue a college degree.

Roles in TV series

The year 1985 saw Cree play Karen Simmons in the episode “Crossfire” of the crime drama “Night Heat”, and the same year heard her voice Kneesaa in the animated family adventure “Ewoks”, starring alongside Jim Henshaw and James Cranna; it follows the lives of fur-balls also known as Ewoks, the series aired from 1985 to 1987, and was nominated for two awards.

Some of Cree’s most notable performances in the remainder of the ‘80s were in the animated family comedy “The Care Bears”, the animated family fantasy “Sylvanian Families”, and the animated adventure “Beany and Cecil”, all voice roles.

In 2001 and 2002, she voiced the lead characters Mo and Misc in the animated comedy “Horrible Histories”, created by Charlie Stickney and Martha Atwater, and which also starred Billy West and Jess Harnell; it’s based on Terry Deary’s eponymous book series, and was nominated for a single award. Cree could then have been heard voicing characters in the short animated comedy “Clifford the Big Red Dog”, the animated action adventure “Spider-Man”, and the animated family comedy “The Proud Family”.

Her following film role came in 1995, when cast to voice Elmyra Duff aka Dr. Frankenmyra in the animated adventure comedy “Tiny Toons’ Night Ghoulery”, directed by Rich Arons and Michael Gerard, and which starred Joe Alaskey, Tress MacNeille and John Kassir. It follows the Tiny Toons as they’re parodying various horror stories, including “Frankenstein” and “The Devil and Daniel Webster”, and the film was nominated for two awards.
