A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
A Daily Mail Book of the Year. A Mail on Sunday Book of the Year.
Famed American actress Demi Moore at last tells her own story in a surprisingly intimate and emotionally charged memoir.
For decades, Demi Moore has been synonymous with celebrity. From iconic film roles to high-profile relationships, Moore has never been far from the spotlight – or the headlines.
Even as Demi was becoming the highest paid actress in Hollywood, however, she was always outrunning her past, just one step ahead of the doubts and insecurities that defined her childhood. Throughout her rise to fame and during some of the most pivotal moments of her life, Demi battled addiction, body image issues, and childhood trauma that would follow her for years – all while juggling a skyrocketing career and at times negative public perception. As her success grew, Demi found herself questioning if she belonged in Hollywood, if she was a good mother, a good actress – and, always, if she was simply good enough.
As much as her story is about adversity, it is also about tremendous resilience. In this deeply candid and reflective memoir, Demi pulls back the curtain and opens up about her career and personal life – laying bare her tumultuous relationship with her mother, her marriages, her struggles balancing stardom with raising a family, and her journey toward open heartedness. Inside Out is a story of survival, success, and surrender – a wrenchingly honest portrayal of one woman’s at once ordinary and iconic life.

As for Ashton and someone worrying about what his kids will read about him some day? Get a life. They’d find out about his past even without this book. It’s already out there and he brought it on himself. Like I said, she was still very kind. I’m sure he’s not a saint now either. As for her parents - whoa. They were both obvious sociopath/ narcissists. I mean, come on. You can’t even cover that up with whatever minor good quality that might come out in either of them at one moment in time. I still don’t think she quite gets that about them. You can’t make excuses for people like that or try to justify it. You shouldn’t. So overall, I think she was way too nice to everyone she wrote about, like I said.
It took me over two years to buy/read the book because I listened to bad press/gossip and assumed it was going to be over the top juicy to where you don’t even know what you can believe to be true and then assumed I’d just be listening to a celebrity put themself on a pedestal, but it wasn’t like that at all! So I’m glad I finally read it. She was in a lot of great movies, I’m glad to know she’s actually a really humble person and glad to know Bruce is a great dad. (I was curious to know more about him too which is also why I read the book, but only learned basic things about him. I’m sure she felt a lot of stuff about him wasn’t her place to tell.) I felt the book kind of ended abruptly sometime in the early 2010’s even though it was written in 2019…I felt like I could have read several more chapters than it had… but I really hope Demi continues to find her way in life and continues to thrive and grow as a person. Whether she continues to act or not doesn’t matter. I just wish her the best in her real life journey.

Although it covers her life, it is written more to present herself rather than the image movies and the media have recorded and shown. It makes little effort to dwell upon her film roles or justify her success and glamour. Rather it is a deeply personal account, a response to the lowest point of her life when she needed help or faced passing away or taking her own life through substance misuse and or with intent.
I feel the experience of writing about herself gave her the chance to spend time and discover who she is and what she is a product of growing up and finding fame in Hollywood.
In this sense the book is as much for Demi, a catharsis in getting her truth out as well as the usual money generating self publicising biographies.
It is a project that reveals a great deal and perhaps in exposing herself rather than conforming or playing a role provides not just insight but hope for others who have shared experiences in their lives.
As a fan of her movies she is an accomplished actress, a sex symbol and a powerful woman in my prior thinking. Having read this book, I see the glitz for what it is, the image so far removed from the person and the individual more interesting than any part she has undertaken.
This is not a choreographed chronological rise to stardom but a painful journey to self-awareness. Based on pain, hurt, disappointment, abandonment even being pimped. From illness to addiction, searching to self-loathing. Ultimately it is about relationships, human frailty, broken promises and unspoken words.
I feel I appreciate her life better, not as a CV of work but of her life roles, daughter, wife, mother and friend. I am glad she didn’t give up, didn’t take on titles others gave her or expected her to be. Demi searched for herself and it is an affirming revelation.
It was heart-warming to see the photos at the end reflecting her life story and the closing words of gratitude affirming those relationships that brought the book to print and sustain Demi’s life.
