Many attractive hits like "By The Time I Get To Phenix" and "Wichita Lineman" are included.

"Mornin' Glory" and "All I Have To Do Is Dream" were written by Bobbie Gentry.

This compilation, probably the only Glen Campbell material I'll ever need, is a wonderful catalogue of how one of the best popular musicians of the 60s turned into one of the schlockiest of the 70s.

Not to imply, that is, that schlock isn't present in his 60s material, in fact it's necessary to the songs. But there's something incredibly magical about the string of singles starting with "Guess I'm Dumb" that really captures a 60s suburban masculine ideal—often about rambling, other times with subtle anti-Vietnam messaging, other times with exuberant celebration of the working class. Disc one of this compilation is really special, because it feels like the one "great double album of the 60s" that Campbell did, not canonized due to its not being an actual album (rather, a string of excellent singles from a bunch of albums that otherwise served primarily as slices of plastic).

The second disc tells us what we're gonna get from its first track, "Honey Come Back", a cloying half-spoken-word song in which Campbell admits that he's run out of things to say after the first verse. This is where Campbell's music increases its schlock and diminishes what had been rewarding about it for me. There are still some nice songs on disc two, no doubt, but it's a let down after the triumphant, beautiful, melancholic ambrosia that saturates the first disc. "Just Another Piece of Paper" is really funny, though.

This is one of my favs of all time. Didn't expected that when I bought it (just for "By the time I get to Phoenix"). Keep playing it and has a good lot of buried treasures. "Wichita lineman" is in my point of view, the best song ever recorded.

I got this because there are some songs on here that need to be in any (Country or Pop) music collection, half expecting a 2 CD compilation of Glen Campbell music couldn't be that exciting and in the end I'll probably be just liking half of it. How wrong I was! Starting as a session guitarist, Glen became an excellent musical stylist who was always on top from the late 60s to the mid-70s. This is a perfect compilation that's cheap and tells the whole story (if you don't count his lush 80s Country hits). Hardly a bad song here, only some that for once aren't timeless and moving tunes like (the definite versions of) "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" (just one of 10 Jimmy Webb songs to be found here), "Gentle On My Mind", "Mary In The Morining" and so I could go on. They also didn't go easy on lesser known songs and covers, like his naked reading of the Leon Payne classic "They'll Never Take Her Love From Me" or the title song of the awesome "True Grit" movie where our beloved "Rhinestone Cowboy" co-starrs along John Wayne - another American original. Musically he is somewhere between sophisticated Pop and Nashville Country, reminds me of some Elvis stuff from the same time, but no worries - Glen can stand on his own shoes and was at the time just as great as the king. Call it MOR if you must as long as that's not in a negative sense, Glen never forgot where he came from ("Country Boy" just might be autobiographical) and always keeps it exciting - I really don't understand why some people would consider this "bad music", but then I don't understand a lot of things. I found me here excactly what I'm looking for in music. By the way, it seems like he's planning another "Comeback" (as in his 1975 hit) with Meet Glen Campbell, an upcoming major label album with a quite unexpected tracklist (ever expected him to cover VU?) and I wish him all the best with it (hell, it might be the only new album I'm gonna buy in 2008). Till then I'll give this some more spins.

Further listening: Wichita Lineman, Rhinestone Cowboy / Bloodline, Sings the Best of Jimmy Webb 1967-1992, The Legacy [1961-2002]

A beautiful collection from his very finest years. Includes a score of great Jimmy Webb tunes as well as the magnificent "Guess I'm Dumb", written and produced by Brian Wilson; a buried treasure, if there ever was one!
