The Oxford History of Britain Paperback – 15 April 2010

There is a newer edition of this item:

The Oxford History of Britain tells the story of Britain and its people over two thousand years, from the coming of the Roman legions to the present day. Encompassing political, social, economic, and cultural developments throughout the British Isles, the dramatic narrative is taken up in turn by ten leading historians who offer the fruits of the best modern scholarship to the general reader in an authoritative form.

A vivid, sometimes surprising picture emerges of a continuous turmoil of change in every period, and the wider social context of political and economic tension is made clear. But consensus, no less than conflict, is a part of the story: in focusing on elements of continuity down the centuries, the authors bring out that special awareness of identity which has been such a distinctive feature of British society. By relating both these factors in the British experience, and by exploring the many ways in which Britain has shaped and been shaped by contact with Europe and the wider world, this landmark work brings the reader face to face with the past, and the foundations of modern British society.

The new edition brings the story into the twenty-first century, covering the changes to British society and culture during the Blair years and the invasion of Iraq and its aftermath.

I can't deny this book is a bit of a slog to read in parts, with a cast of thousands in some chapters with names only very slightly more memorable than those in War And Peace, but nevertheless I'm slogging through it and enjoying it enormously. It's full of jaw-dropping facts and interesting things I'm ashamed to admit I didn't know. For example in the section about the Anglo Saxons I had to read the following sentence twice: 'Among the many groups competing for land in tenth-century Britain was a new one - the Norweigians from Ireland....' What? Norweigans in Ireland? How did that happen? Does everyone know this apart from me? And how about ' the twin Norse cities of York and Dublin expanded fast' (I sort of knew about York because of that lovely museum there, but Dublin?!) and 'During the reigns of Athelstan and Edmund, the enemies of the English were the Norweigans more than the Danes'. What? The Danes as well?! I apologise to my history teacher at secondary school (Sister Mary Something) for not paying more attention. I mean, is it common knowledge that the Norweigians practically owned Dublin and we were ruled by Danes?!!! Sister Mary Something is probably turning in her grave by now. But rest assured Sister I promise I'm now educating myself in all the things I definitely should have paid attention to at school instead of talking to that nice boy on a Lambretta over the school wall. So, yes, this book is brilliant. Read it and be amazed and remember when you do your dna test don't be surprised if you're at least 1 per cent Norweigian or Danish - not that the ethnicity side of dna tests is particularly accurate as any dna genealogist will tell you. I digress. (By the way, I married the boy on the Lambretta. He wasn't Danish. Or Norweigian. He was from Souf Lundon, and very nice he was too. Nyedelig in fact. Or even Dejlige!

Great book of social history, but problem is because there is so much info packed into one paperback book the text size is very small, perhaps it should be split into two books.
