Repressing. Full title: Love Me Love My Friends- the Paul Jones Collection Vol. 2. Paul Jones, the original Manfred Mann vocalist, cut a series of excellent solo albums and singles between 1966 and 1971, which charted his musical development from Pop/R&B to Progressive, through Dylan covers to Psychedelia, and his own song writing progress. This 1967 album Love Me Love My Friends is a mixture of Country Blues, Rock 'n' Roll and Folk Rock. Bonus tracks include the uncensored and unissued 'Bugger Burns', plus single tracks and eight unissued recordings from the same year. RPM.

To me, Paul Jones was the finest vocalist of the 60's British invasion period. His signature moment of being the vocalist for "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" and other early Manfred Mann hits was perhaps also a curse; it caused many to overlook his great efforts on MM's jazz and blues tinged LP tracks. The band stayed close to their blues roots and (along with Georgie Fame) was one of the first invasion bands to foray into jazz.
Jones, in his solo career, veered more into the pop field, albeit in his own style, and basically disappeared from the US scene after the soundtrack "Privilege." His material of that period was supported by orchestras and horn sections and therefore hewed closer to acts like David and Jonathan and Jonathan King, and so on. For the best of that, I would refer you to Volume One of this series. Not that this is a bad CD, it's just that fledgling Paul Jones fans would be better to start with the earlier stuff.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better sounding reissue. RPM did a stunning job with the remaster. The songs sound lush and stunning. You can tell from a mile away that this is the Abbey Road / EMI sound.
The material is weaker than volume 1 of this series. There are a lot more duds than hits. Paul Jones, unfortunately, had to rely on other writers and producers. His covers of soul songs are pretty soulless. Cabaret-ville.
Simply from a lush 60s production point of view, this is a fun listen. There are some surprises, too. Paul does a beautiful version of Dylan's 'The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll'. Sons & Lovers and All The Time In The World are also interesting.
All I can really say is - what a waste. Paul Jones, undoubtedly one of the best singers ever, left the superb Manfred Mann in 1966 to do what? Record this wierdo M.O.R pap??1?? Not a very good career move in my opinion. If you like Manfred Mann stuff, stick with that - it's much better.
... ma questo cantante è sempre stato, da quando era coi Manfred Mann e poi con la Blues band, uno dei miei preferiti, specialmente quando faceva blues, qui affronta un repertorio più leggero, ma sempre con classe
