      Critics Consensus

There's no denying that mother! is the thought-provoking product of a singularly ambitious artistic vision, though it may be too unwieldy for mainstream tastes.

Dahlia Balcazar Bitch Media Mother! is what happens when a dude has an idea he thinks is brilliant and no one checks him on it. Mar 1, 2021 Full Review Michael Sragow Film Comment Magazine [Darren] Aronofsky wants mother! to have the intensity and inner logic of a sweaty nightmare. But it's a fake cinematic fever dream-the kind made by a director so self-conscious that he's always checking his own temperature. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Jordan Hoffman Times of Israel When you eventually see this you may hate it, but you can't say it isn't brilliant. Feb 1, 2018 Full Review Clayton Schuster Vague Visages If mother! lacks the refinement of a manifesto for a new breed of movie theater flick, it makes up for it in the audacity to be unique. Dec 6, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Once movies leave their creators’ hands they often become their own thing. “mother!” benefits from that truth. While Aronofsky has a pointed personal meaning behind it, what you bring to the film will help define it for you. Rated: 4/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Fletcher Powell KMUW - Wichita Public Radio You may think it’s high art or garbage, but this movie is a singular experience. S R 1001 movies to see before you die (added later). Yes this movie was bizarre and evocative. Does that make it good? No. Instead it was frustrating and contrived for disturbing. I don't plan to ever see it again. RUS. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review Marie C An absolute masterpiece. For anyone that disagrees, simply doesn’t understand the film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/01/24 Full Review Dark M This film is a masterpiece. There is not one excessive or wasted word or image. Like a Bach composition there is a point and counterpoint to every element, plot, character, line, object, detail. You can look at it from an allegorical perspective or simply taken at face value it is a beautiful and complete symphony exploring reality and human emotion and experience on many different levels both obvious and subtle. It is a story for anyone who has been violated or even just had their boundaries disrespected. It explores the very nature of violence, reality, and existence through poetry, subconscious metaphor, and deeply moving and emotionally nuanced performances. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/01/24 Full Review Zion J The point of mother is to represent humanity torturing and violating Mother Earth, If you look into the roles you will understand what each of them represent, Mother isn't the best but it's definitely a nightmare, It's probably going to piss you off though Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Luca C Another Aronofsky's masterpiece. This time an underrated one. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Claudiu U A narcissistic egocentric take on the sacrifice needed for creation. I would recommend watching this only if you are resilient to shock and alone. It can give you nightmares at least for one day, it's quite disturbing...
