What do the Icons and Symbols Mean on Tinder

If you have recently joined Tinder, you must be confused to see many unknown symbols and icons in the app. And tapping on any unknown symbol can be scary. Read this guide to know the meaning of all the symbols and icons present in the Tinder app.

List of Icons on the Home Screen

Icons at the Top

  1. Bell Icon: This icon shows your recent activity such as likes, super likes, etc.
  2. Two-Bar Icon: Use this icon to customize the discovery settings for your profile, such as age range, distance, etc.

Icons Under the Profile Photo

  1. Rewind Button: This is the Undo button. If you accidentally reject or like someone on Tinder, this button lets you undo your action. The undo feature can be used by Tinder premium members only.
  2. Red X Symbol: Tinder is famous for right and left swipe gestures where the left swipe means to reject a profile and the right means like. The red X icon is similar to left swiping, i.e., it will reject the profile.
  3. Blue Star Icon: This icon represents the Super like feature. You can also swipe up on the profile to super like someone. When you super like someone, they will see the blue star next to your name. It lets the other person know they are more special than others. Free users can send only 1 Super like per day.
  4. Green Heart Icon: This icon symbolizes the popular right swipe action i.e., like the person’s profile. If two people swipe right on each other’s profile, it’s considered a match on Tinder and they can start messaging each other.
  5. Purple Lightning Bolt Icon: Pressing this icon boosts your profile in your area for the next 30 minutes and you become among the top profiles. This increases your chance of being seen by more people. This feature isn’t available for free. Tinder premium subscribers receive one free boost per month. You can pay separately to get more boosts.

Icons at the Bottom

  1. Tinder Logo Icon: Tap this icon to go to your Tinder feed from any other screen.
  2. Search feed: Tap this icon to open the Explore page where you will find potential profiles based on various categories.
  3. Gold Star: Tap on this icon to view the profiles that have liked you, top picks, and recommended profiles curated by Tinder for you. These profiles refresh every 24 hours.
  4. Two Speech Bubbles: Tap this icon to see your matches and the messages section on Tinder. If you are a premium Tinder user, you can view who has liked your profile before you swipe right on them in a separate section known as Likes you on the Matches page.
  5. Person Icon: This icon represents the profile section. Tap on this to edit your Tinder profile and purchase premium subscriptions or buy features like super likes, boosts, etc.

Additional Icons:

  • Up Arrow: Tap it to expand or view the user’s full profile.
  • Red Down Arrow: After opening the user’s profile, tap on this red down arrow to go back to the regular view of the profile.

Meaning of Symbols Next to Tinder User’s Name

  1. Gold Heart: A golden heart (or a gold heart with three lines) indicates the person is a Tinder Gold or Tinder Platinum subscriber or you need the subscription to view something.
  2. Blue Star: It means the person has sent you a superlike.
  3. Blue Checkmark: It means the user has verified their photos with Tinder i.e., the user has passed the photo verification process of Tinder. Please note that this checkmark only represents photo verification and nothing else.
  4. Green Dot Icon: You will see it next to the profiles that have been active or online in the last 24 hours.
  5. Gold Diamond Symbol: This icon means the profile is one of your top picks for the day. This list is curated by Tinder based on the profiles you may have liked in the past.

Tinder Messaging Icons Meaning

  1. Blue Video Camera Icon: Tap this icon to video call your match. Thankfully, the video chat isn’t started directly. Tapping on the Video camera icon will show a pop-up where you need to enable the toggle next to Face to Face before you can start a video call. Also, both you and your match must activate the Face to Face feature to video chat.
  2. Three-dot (or Blue Shield Icon): Tap this icon to report the user, unmatch with the profile, or access safety resources and tools. Learn how to block someone on Tinder.
  3. Two Blue Checkmark Icons: This icon indicates that the other person has read the message.
  4. Heart Icon: Press the heart icon next to a message to like it.

In addition to the above icons, you may see some additional icons on someone’s profile. These have a similar meaning to the options shown while editing a profile. You can check their meaning by tapping on the Edit Profile button on your profile.
