Are you about to be stationed at a military base in Germany? One of the great things about joining the armed forces is that it gives you the chance to see the world. You will often be stationed in other countries to complete special training and different types of operations.
However, if this is your first time being stationed abroad, you are likely to feel a little nervous. You are sure to have questions about the available facilities at the installation, especially the housing situation.
So, let’s take a closer look at the main US military bases in Germany and what they have to offer.

Ramstein AFB
This installation was built in 1951 and is the headquarters for USAF operations in Europe and Africa. It is set in the German Rhineland and used as a center for training and United States Air force operations in Europe.
Life on the base…
There is a large housing community on the site with hundreds of single-family homes. More than 50,000 US personnel are stationed in the area, which has earned it the nickname “Little America.”
Ramstein AFB boasts a vibrant atmosphere that is sure to make you feel right at home. Special sports tournaments are organized during leisure time to help units mix and mingle.
There are several community stations to make use of, which feature swimming pools and a bowling center. The area also features American fast food franchises such as Popeye’s and Burger King.
Spangdahlem AFB
This installation is home to the 52nd fighter wing, which specializes in suppressing enemy air defenses. It can be found in the town of Spangdahlem, close to the city of Trier. A wide range of facilities can be found on the site, including a community center with an active theater group.
Stationed personnel will also be able to unwind in the officers-enlisted club. The town and city boast a wide range of American eateries such as Baskins Robbins, Charley’s Steakery, and Burger King. There is also a military clothing sales store where you can purchase new boots and other essential items.
USAG Baumholder
This installation hosts the largest community of American troops outside of the United States. It was established in 1951, and more than 13,000 American personnel are stationed here. The center can be found on the edge of the small historic town of Westrich and is known as “The Rock.”
Personnel will find a vibrant community both on the site and in the neighboring town. There are plenty of recreational options for service members during their leisure time. This includes a movie theater, several eateries, and a collection of bars.
USAG Grafenwoehr
This is a relatively new installation, established in 2013. Service members will find a wide range of modern facilities, including accommodation options. The center covers over 150 square miles and is used for a range of different training operations.
There are four main types of on-site accommodation options to choose from. If you are being transferred to the installation, you will be guided through the different options. Some of it is designed for families, so you may have the option of bringing your partner with you.
USAG Heidelberg
This center is situated close to the Neckar River in southwestern Germany. More than 12,000 personnel and their families live on-site at any one time. New service members usually spend their first few nights in a hotel before being assigned accommodation.
One of the highlights of the social scene here is the Roadside Theater, which hosts a range of cultural activities. Service members and their families are actively encouraged to audition for shows and other events.
There is also a large bowling center and a small golf course located on the site. A special education program is also offered to children of different ages.
USAG Kaiserslautern
This US military installation in Germany is located in the Rhineland-Palatinate region. It is home to a large American community consisting of more than 50,000 service members and their families. Both service members and civilians will find that there is a lot to do both on and off the site.
A family-friendly base…
As you would expect from an installation of this size, it features everything you need to get established. Furthermore, the center boasts the largest AAFES shopping facility in the whole of Europe. It includes a Post Exchange, a combined Base Exchange, and exclusive services for DOD ID card holders.
There are several libraries for service members and their families, as well as shops. The apartments and other on-site accommodation options all come complete with kitchens and dining rooms.
Additionally, several American restaurants can also be found on-site, including Romano’s Macaroni Grill and a Chili’s franchise.
USAG Schweinfurt
This center has evolved into a vibrant community over the years, and it is home to more than 4,000 service members. The center can be found in the heart of the country and is the size of a small town. The center boasts two large areas for living and two areas for training.
Many service members are stationed at the installation for long periods and are encouraged to bring their families. The center is a very safe place for children of all ages to spend time. There are several schools in the area as well as educational options for younger children.
The surrounding countryside is also just waiting to be explored during leisure time. Outdoor pursuits such as hiking, mountain biking, and fishing are popular with service members and their families. Also, several towns and villages offer a taste of traditional German cuisine.
USAG Bamberg
This center is located on Warner Barracks in Bamberg, Germany. A large number of both American and German personnel are stationed here and take part in special operations. The center is fully-equipped to provide new personnel with a high quality of life.
Most personnel are situated on Warner Barracks, and there is a range of accommodation options. Service members will also find nearby shops, bars, and restaurants for them to unwind. There is also a large recreational center located right on the site.
USAG Mannheim
This American military garrison in Germany is home to more than 300,000 citizens and is surrounded by recreational areas.
It can be found just a short drive from the city of Mannheim, which is the perfect place to purchase supplies. The area is blessed with a moderate climate with fairly hot summers and a little snow in the winters.
Most troops that are stationed here are housed in Benjamin Franklin village, which offers a range of accommodation options. The village features a bakery and a selection of other shops. There are also several bars and other facilities in the surrounding area.
Close to a major German city…
Frankfurt can be found just sixty miles to the north of the installation, and this is a good place to spend time. This vibrant city offers everything that service members and their families need.
There are numerous historical and cultural attractions to explore as well as traditional markets. The city also boasts a richly diverse nightlife scene, complete with bars, restaurants, and theaters. Among the US military bases in Germany, this is one of the busiest.
USAG Stuttgart
This base has served as the headquarters of the Special Operations Command and EUCOM in Europe since 1967. The on-site units are mainly responsible for maintaining aircraft and completing special training programs. The service members come from all branches of the armed forces.
There are several different types of accommodation options at USAG Stuttgart. These range from shared accommodation for single service members to multiple-bedroom apartments and entire houses. If you are only deployed for a few days, you will also find several hotels and inns located nearby.
Plenty to do when off-base…
While the center boasts a wide range of facilities, the main attraction is the vibrant city of Stuttgart. It is possible to travel into the heart of the city from the installation in just a few minutes.
There are numerous world-famous attractions to check out in the city. As well as excellent shopping and dining opportunities.
USAG Wiesbaden
This installation was taken over by American troops in 1945. The center has been extensively upgraded and added to over the years. Over the last decade, the installation played a key role in the War on Terrorism.
Around 3,000 American service members are currently stationed at the center. Many service members are stationed at the center for several months or even longer. They are permitted to take their families with them and are provided with first-rate accommodation options.
The center also boasts an excellent range of facilities for service members and their families. The center is constantly on standby mode, so service members have to be ready at all times. Therefore, there are shops, eateries, education centers, and recreational facilities located right on the base.
USAG Ansbach
Located in the northern part of Bavaria, USAG Ansbach is a two-hour drive from the Alps. While the center is not involved in active combat, the stationed service members complete special flight training there. Service members will also find an excellent range of facilities located on the site.
Accommodation options…
The nearby Franconian Inn is a popular place for new service members to stay while they are finding their feet. This establishment offers special accommodation deals for service members that includes breakfast and other meals on request.
The on-site accommodation options range from two-bedroom to four-bedroom houses, which are very modern in design.
This large military installation is located just thirty miles from the city of Nurnberg. This is a great place for service members to explore in groups and with their families. The city boasts a range of both traditional European eateries and American fast food franchises.
Panzer Kaserne Marine Corps Base Boeblingen, Germany
This co-base is run by the United States of America and operated under German regulations. It can be found on the outskirts of Stuttgart on the southern side of the country.
Several other military bases can be found a short distance away. The name of the center comes from the German word for “tank,” and it played a key role in WWII.
The center is located just two hours from the vibrant city of Munich and is surrounded by small traditional villages. There are also farmlands and forests for service members and their families to explore.
A great place for families…
The children of service members are welcome to attend Boeblingen Elementary School and make use of the library.
The camp features several bars, cinemas, several gardens, and skating parks. Service members will find a selection of shops, banking services, and a post office. There is also a wide range of on-site accommodation to choose from.

US Military Bases in Germany – Conclusion
