Absolutely breathtaking trail. Started around 9 am & the sun was peaking through the trees in the most stunning way. The trail was steep in sections but extremely worth it!!!! You begin in the beautiful redwood forest then meet the coast. Such an incredible combo! On the way back, probably near 10 am, the fog rolled in offering a different kind of beauty! Would do this again & again if I lived here haha!
Tough but worth it!! Watch out for millipedes! I think we may have been walking through the millions millipede migration (sorry lil guys! We tried to watch our step!) The trail is in great condition and the beach is really cool. Beautiful walk the whole way. Rhododendrons were starting to bloom and there were other wildflowers too.
While a short hike, this is not to be taken lightly - Probably the steepest and most challenging physically of all the hikes. I did this 2x and each time differently. The first time, I started at Crescent Beach overlook and hiked the Coastal Trail down to Damnation Creek Tr, then out to the beach. Full review and photos: https://www.goatbells.blog/?p=7050
Gorgeous hike but closed at coast trail. We did this hike about 20 years ago and were so excited to try it again. Even without the lower portion open, the hike through the giant redwoods and ferns is breathtaking. You can hear highway 101 throughout the upper half of the hike.
On August 14, 2023 the trail was open except the final 1.4 miles to the beach. We were just looking for redwood serenity and for that it's disappointing. The trail stays close to US 101 for the first mile and the traffic noise echoes all through the valley. We turned south on the paved Coastal Trail and finally found a quiet spot about 1/2 mile south of the Damnation Creek Trail junction. Without the beach access I wouldn't recommend this trail.
