In 1897, in a castle near the town of Werewolfville in the Carpithians, a slightly deranged Professor Orfanik experiments with his new inventions which include, even at this early date, television and a film camera. He is also an obsessed opera fan, keeps the body of his favorite diva preserved in a crypt in the castle. In order to keep away nosy visitors, the baron's mad-scientist assistant, invents all sorts of spooky phenomena in order to give the castle a creepy reputation.

In my review of Oldřich Lipský's delightfully strange Adele Hasn’t Had Her Dinner Yet, I mentioned that, despite using the medium very differently, he and fellow Czech Karel Zeman seem to share a very similar, almost anarchic sensibility when it comes to filmmaking. And, delightfully, there's now a casting connection, too: exactly two decades after starring in Zeman's The Fabulous Baron Munchausen, Miloš Kopecký played another eccentric baron — this time for Lipský — in The Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians.

The steampunk version of a Sherlock Holmes mystery as imagined by Jules Verne. And that’s just one of many possible handles to put on this wonderfully eccentric Czech fantasy extravaganza.
It’s the third and final collaboration of director Oldrich Lipskŷ and screenwriter Jiři Brdečka, all of them absolutely worth checking out. All three are cult movies in their home country, but the only one with something of an international reputation is the first one, the wacky Western comedy Lemonade Joe. That one was followed by my personal favourite, the absolutely incredible, hilarious Nick Carter detective spoof Adele Hasn’t Had Supper Yet, about a master criminal and his giant carnivorous plant.

Take one lesser Jules Verne novel (which may or may not have inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula). Add a few glugs of Czech Surrealism and put it on a low heat. Add some very clever Czech wordplay which will remain undetectable to anyone from outside that country (I've heard a rumour it's in there). Pour in a couple of cups of irreverent humour and when it boils, throw in some Sherlock Holmes, Don Quixote, Monty Python, Hammer horror, a whole shitload of the Abominable Dr Phibes, inadvisable quantities of opera and just a sprinkling of Svankmajer stop-motion. A gleeful and glorious genre-emptying classic that fits snugly into a long lineage of films and artists that transform what we think of as reality. The cinematic techniques born of its early days point easily towards the likes of Méliès, Feuillade, and many slapstick heroes of yore. Oldřich Lipský has again and again proven himself a master of the moving time/image, understanding its architecture so inherently that the spaces within the film become a playground in ways that most can barely grasp, let along recreate.

Tajemství hradu v Karpatech je snad jediný český film, který mě nepřestává překvapovat už od mých dětských let. Moc dobře si pamatuji, jak jsem se, jako malá, u tohoto filmu bála a teď po nějakých dvaceti letech jsem se u něj zase válela smíchy, protože mi některé scény přišli naprosto dokonalé. Rekvizity a kostýmy od pana Švankmajera nemají chybu a jsou krásné- to Honza umí, ale co mě překvapuje mnohem víc jsou herecké výkony. V některých částech jakoby by byly záměrně nepřesvědčivé, což vytváří ten vtip a určitý komický nadhled.
A strange little comedy film that has multiple moments of slapstick brilliance, but also ends up strung along to a point that starts to get a bit tiring by the last act.
Essentially the story of a famed opera singer who comes to a small village to recuperate and decides to go investigate the local castle after hearing that it might be haunted. Ultimately he comes to believe that the lost love of his life might be imprisoned there as well, but mostly it's his hubris and inquisitiveness that drives him forward.
