A plain, square looking country house from the outside, this shape facilitates a light and airy inside which shows off the family's art collection to good effect. The house is stuffed with antiquities and there are lots of guides on-hand to tell you all about it and relay interesting stories about famous people who stayed there over the years.

The grounds do not have many flower boarders, rather you can marvel at the magnificent mature trees that abound. And of course the jewel in the crown is the lake where Dianna rests.

Worth a visit if you're in the area.

Birthday treat to myself, as I love visiting stately homes and am a massive fan of the Rabbit Hole Detectives podcast, starring Charles, Earl Spencer. The house is lovely, so obviously a family home that is cared for with respect and awe by its residents. The artwork is stunning, (Rubens, Reynolds and Stubbs!) the gardens are well laid-out and in the style of the era of the house and the lake is a restful place to reflect on Princess Diana and her legacy. I had the cream tea - a massive cup of Earl grey tea and scone with clotted cream and jam (first the former, then the latter - I’m originally from Devon!) and enjoyed the shop as well. I’m happy to support this lovely place which honours the past and reminds us that we are custodians of this earth and its treasures, not owners.

I was expecting a more impressive house but it was still interesting to visit Lady Di's birthplace. There aren't many memories of her in the building but there is a small mausoleum of hers in the pond.

First time To the home of Spencers the house is very grand with lots of paintings and the grounds are stunning, You can see the island on the lake where The princess of the Wales is said to be buried there are lots of rumours that she has actually buried in the local church with the rest of the Spencer’s in their private crypt ,the pathways are very disabled friendly and easy to get around the house you’re not allowed to take electric buggies in. I would say it was a worthwhile visit as the house is not always open to the public so have a look on their website for times of opening also if you are a blue badge holder wait by the gate if you can park near the house.

My wife and I wanted too visit where Dianna had been laying at rest for many years now it’s a beautiful place the house is very well maintained and decorated the gardens are outstanding and where she lays at rest is so tranquil people walk around and whisper that’s all you can hear are the birds. Well worth a visit.

History of historic houses. May I suggest that if your going here to see and pay tribute to Diana then you will be severely disappointed the resting place of Diana is over grown and if Diana is buried in the centre then it’s a disgrace to her name. My theory is Diana is interned in the church we’re the rest of the Spencer’s are. The monument is there to lay flowers a couple of pictures at the house and basically that’s it.
Car par is a field and a good 15 to twenty minutes walk to the house. Not for people with disabilities who have problems walking. Which brings me too the ignorance of some people not all disabilities can be seen by the human eye. To the Baffoon who complained that people were parking in the disabled car park and saying they were not disabled. How do you know just because you can’t see it dose not mean it’s not present. Disability come in many forms.
The house it self has a lot of history, unfortunately the guardian of the house Earl Spencer lacks vision in not stating who the portraits are and what historical values they stand for. And as for the gardens you may wish to take a journey to Alnwick and take notes on presentation of how to bring colour and beauty to a garden. A beautiful Stately home in need of a more positive approach to its history. How on earth do you expect people to see portraits with know explanation from doors. Your entry fees are not value for money.
As for the mere cafe you have stale sandwiches and ice cream over priced as well as a shop that sells tat. You really need to think again people expect value for money.
On a positive note your books, interesting and informative. Pity you did not generate this knowledge into the house and present historical values of the house and the Spencer’s whom reside in this grand house. Raine almost ruined the house with her changing it into a barbi doll mansion thank goodness it was restored back. But now it lacks history and beauty it’s dull and meaningless a bothy in Scotland has more meaning. Totally disappointed.

We visited as the admission price was included in our HHA membership and we were visiting the area anyway so curious to see a stately home we obviously had heard of. The car park is a long walk from the house - fine for us but my 88 year old mother in law struggled and was exhausted before we even got to the house. I wish the girl at the ticket booth had offered more accessible parking (which does exist) instead of just apologising for the lack of a buggy. When we finally arrived at the house we began with lunch in the attractive Stable Cafe which only offered pre-packed sandwiches or cakes and drinks in paper cups. I was told the sandwiches didn’t taste very fresh but as there weren’t any gluten free ones my savoury option was a bag of crisps. The house is impressive (like many stately homes) and is obviously still lived in which is nice but we were rather underwhelmed by the visitor experience. The staff are very nice but mostly very young (presumably only employed for the few weeks in the summer that it opens) and we learnt very little about the house or family from the information boards in each room. We met our first guide in the Long Gallery (we wondered if we’d seen the ground floor during their lunch break) and she was excellent and very knowledgeable, giving us information about the Spencer family history and origins of the house. Perhaps it was our fault not doing our prep in advance but we have visited lots of houses and had them brought to life for us by tours, room guides or audio-visual displays/ audio tours so we didn’t feel we needed to read up in advance. We visited on a gloriously sunny day and had a pleasant walk round the memorial lake which is tastefully done. We then left in search of tea in pots/cups and cake that wasn’t wrapped in cellophane.

Visited Sunday 20 August 2023. Beautiful house , grounds and gardens. Staff were excellent inside the house; knowledgeable and helpful. We travelled from York so were looking forward to a lunch at the cafe, but very disappointed; all of the sandwiches were mass produced and on their sell-by date (20/08/23) and all all six that we purchased had gone stale. Nothing available looked good and there was nothing freshly made on offer such as jacket potatoes with a filling, or anything. Had we known we would have brought a picnic. Might be helpful if Althorp advised visitors the the cafe is limited to pre packed sandwiches and cakes.

A much better experience than I was expecting. The house gives the impression that it is still very much a home that is lived in. There is a large collection of paintings with some more modern thought provoking pieces and the staff within the home are knowledgeable and friendly.
The gardens are large and relaxing to walk around but not overly fancy. The lake with the island where Diana is buried is a very peaceful place to stop for a while with numerous benches to sit and contemplate.
Compared to the standard National Trust property I prefer Althorp House as it does feel like a home rather than the very staged approach of N.T. properties. Parking is free, the gift shop whilst small does have a wide selection of gifts to purchase at surprisingly reasonable prices and the cafe which has a selection of sandwiches and cakes is far better value than the daylight robbery that National Trust cafes charge.

After reading very mixed reviews we were concerned, however I’m now not sure where negative reviewers visited!
Brilliant day, free parking and a lovely walk down the drive watching the deer. Stable Cafe has basic snacks, cakes and drinks but all good and staff helpful if you can’t find what you want, I.e. wholemeal bread sandwich.
House has a really homely feel, is obviously loved and used by the family. The house has numerous art works, two in particular thought provoking but shows an excellent mix of new and old, this home moves with the times. Bedrooms made up for visitors, nice to think of them being used, good written descriptions with historical facts all around.
Gardens well kept, loved the newly developed walled garden and throughout all staff friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
Thank you for allowing us to share this gem in our county. And the sun shone!
