I enjoyed this collection immensely. I only knew one or two songs already and really liked all the others. I'm planning on getting more collections that have his extended mixes, and I will probably buy most of his albums also.

A. 13 songs on a set specifically titled 'The 12 X 12 Collection' is confusing, although they do call out "Do Ya Wanna Funk" as a 'Bonus Cut'. Really?
B. Many of the songs are NOT presented in their 12" versions - on a set specifically titled "The 12 X 12 Collection" and with back cover notes declaring "Twelve of Sylvester's best 12 inchers..."!
C. Many of the songs are noticeably recorded from vinyl on a set from Megatone Records, and even as the back cover notes declare "...taken directly from the first generation masters." Deceiving.
This collection highlights Sylvester's Hi-NRG 80's period and features some of that era's greatest anthems, as well as some lesser efforts. "Do Ya Wanna Funk," "Don't Stop" and "Be With You" can still pound the plaque off unbrushed teeth. "Hard Up" is a failed, frantic stab at New Wave-ish contemporarianism. "Lovin' Is Really My Game" is a rousing yet puzzlingly perfunctory cover of Brainstorm's superior original from 1977. "Take Me To Heaven" returns successfully to straightforward dance floor energy, while "Takin' Love Into My Own Hands" veers into New Wave/Alt. territory without the too-obvious, self-aware effort heard earlier on "Hard Up".
Sylvester takes on Freda Payne's true classic "Band Of Gold" and kicks butt on Belinda' Carlisle's 1986 rote recitation (as does Bonnie Tyler's menacing assault of the same song, also from 1986, ripely, deliciously over-produced by Jim Steinman - find it!). His voice and conviction elevate his version but this collection embarrassingly offers the 7" single version instead of the 7:30 12" version, which can thankfully be found on the 2006 CD set, Megatone Records 12 Inch Collection, Volume 1.
"Sex" is above-average Megatone electro-energy. "Power of Love" is below-average; frantic and exhausting. "Trouble In Paradise" plows along repetitively, the guest who doesn't know when to leave. Another song disdainfully thrown away here in a shortened form is "Call Me." "One Night Only" does not belong and should have been cut from the herd.
It's unfortunate these songs are presented so poorly. Shabby treatment of Sylvester and his music. Many of these songs can be found on other Sylvester albums and collections, in better quality and in their full lengths. Seek them out.

so many memories...now the 80's seem a million years ago...

There is not now, nor has there ever been, ANYONE like the late Sylvester. His first crossover hit "Dance Disco Heat" tore up the dance floors all across America. This is a collection of some of his best hits. There is just something about his voice that "makes the children" happy! Way before his time (he was actually kicked out of Florida for performing in drag), Sylvester's falsetto will stack up with anyone! If you are a fan of him, don't pass this one by!

I absolutely LOVE Sylvester. He is one of the greatest singers of the '80s and I'm still sad that he passed away. I've spent many happy hours dancing my tail off to his songs, and they NEVER get old. It's over 20 years later, and he still makes me want to jump out of my chair and hit the dance floor. Long live Sylvester!
