perfectly simulates the feeling of visiting your grandpa and getting to pick a movie from his VHS stack. pure comfort food
Patriot Games really suffers by comparison to this much better sequel. They get rid of almost all of the Ryan family dynamics and bring on Milius to punch up the screenplay about the CIA's secret war on a Colombian cartel, yes please. Milius really brings Clancy's fetishism of American military hardware to the fore, especially in the scene where they drop a "cellulose encased laser guided bomb" on a cartel compound. Also the scene where the FBI director, his SUV convoy, and like 20 agents get owned with RPGs in a Bogota alley is still so hard.
The "bad guys" on both the Colombian and American sides have realistic motivations, unlike in Patriot Games where they are just dumb micks…

A Sunday afternoon classic. Felt weird watching this not on TNT or AMC, but it's still quite the thrill. Highlights aren't just the traditional action moments, like a crazy convoy ambush, but also the scene where Harrison Ford is attempting to print the receipts before it's all deleted off the hacked computer. Wish there were a couple more of these Phillip Noyce/Tom Clancy cable staples, because they're perfect for a lazy day.
When it comes to Tom Clancy's big screen adaptations, this one tends to be at the top of the list. And having seen it, I can understand why.
Harrison Ford is gruff yet charming, and the scene with the president towards the end is beyond gratifying. It reflects a lot of the attitude and personality that comes to mind when I think about Jack Ryan. Dafoe is scarcely on screen, yet he leaves an indelible impact. Moffat as the president is fantastic, the polar opposite of Palmer in "24," which this film and its approach to action reminds me of in many ways, despite the fact that this film was released years before that show. De Almeida is an effective…
Awkwardly dated but the square-jawed righteousness I remembered is kind of a smokescreen, as this makes hegemonic analogs of the U.S. government and its self-righteous stupid President, and a drug cartel and its vengeful, fearless kingpin. It even goes so far as to suggest a sort of mutually beneficial economic relationship between the two, how crazy.
Also the killbox sequence here is probably the highlight of Noyce's highly over-appreciated career, but on the other hand it never should have happened because everyone's OpSec is just terrible. You got people making all kinds of unsecured phone calls and forging documents on personal computers, you got millions of dollars in illicit narcotraffic thoroughly documented on a single floppy disk, you got security guys not spotting simple tails or ignoring basic tactical rules like "look up and see the 10 snipers on the roof" or "have alternate routes."
Fucking right! This is why I absolutely adore 90s cinema, it's because of awesome actioners like this. Clear And Present Danger checked soooo many boxes for me, including:
- Harrison Ford ✅
- Willem Dafoe ✅
- Joaquim de Almeida ✅
- Raymond Cruz ✅
- An absolutely stacked supporting cast ✅
- Shady dealings & operations by the United States government ✅
- Colombian drug cartels ✅
- Our main character getting help from nerdy analysts (by the way of encryption, demolition schematics & voice modulation) ✅
- A convoy being taken out one by one via rocket launcher ✅
- A cat-and-mouse computer hacking sequence ✅
- A pilot with a serious drinking problem ✅
and last but certainly not…
I’ve watched a bunch of Jack Ryan stuff this week and here is my conclusion: the most dangerous place in the world to be is anywhere near Jack Ryan, who constantly survives situations where literally everyone else dies
The Dad Movie Checklist:
Within the "political thriller" genre - ✅
Features a government conspiracy or cover-up - ✅
Involves the military - ✅
Features drug cartels - ✅
A Tom Clancy adaptation - ✅
Features (ludicrous and/or analog) action sequences - ✅
Harrison Ford (yelling) - ✅
A non-batshit crazy Willem Dafoe character - ✅
I've fully gone dad mode. It only took seven years as a father, but this is the main kind of comfort food I crave now. While it felt inherently wrong watching this on a streaming service instead of having picked it out of large stack of VHS tapes or having found it on TBS or TNT on a random Saturday afternoon, this hit the…
the epitome of sleepy 90s thriller blockbuster cinema. this is 140 minutes long in times when those type of mainstream hitters were expected to not overstep 100 minutes. and you can tell they're not used to produce such a mammoth - it's overstuffed and loses itself quickly in the midst of creating the whole construction. not even Willem Dafoe could save it. felt like i took 3 days to get through with this.
100-word review: With neither the spectacular premise of the first film, nor the focused storytelling of the second film, Clear and Present Danger presents the overlong entry in the franchise; an attempt at making a Jack Ryan adaptation 'bigger' than it actually is, or is supposed to be. The first two acts don't feature nearly enough Dafoe, and as a whole the film lacks 'crazy Dafoe'. Instead we get a furious 'hack battle' between non-hackers, and corny one-liners like "I don't mean the President — you gave your word to his boss: the people of the United States." A middling affair.
