  • The plot of the movie is yet to be revealed, but previous versions focused on a group of friends saving their Overworld from the Ender Dragon.

News about the Minecraft movie continues to pour in, and it looks more and more like it might be the next big thing for video game adaptations. Minecraft is a sandbox game launched in 2011 and is the best-selling video game in history with millions of monthly active users, and is a game known for firing the imagination of its player base. To say Minecraft has a massive audience is an understatement, so it's a given that — if Warner Bros. places their blocks right — the Minecraft movie could be one of the highest box-office earners of the decade.

The Minecraft movie first went into production in 2014, and nine years later a lot has changed — both with the movie, the wider entertainment landscape, and with the game itself. While there is no real story that the Minecraft movie can pull from the game, Minecraft does have its lore that fans latch onto, and that is where things will be important for the movie to get it right. The Minecraft movie has been a long time coming, but the highly anticipated game adaptation is coming very soon.

Minecraft Movie Story Details

Plot Details Are Still Unknown

Steve faces an Ender Dragon in Minecraft.

This is essentially the main draw for the movie, and it stands to make it one of the most ambitious and original video game adaptations of all time.

Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer were hired to rewrite the script in early 2023 (via Deadline), but there are still no details on what the Minecraft movie story might be. The game is a sandbox, which means people can go and build their own worlds and societies and then invite other players to come and explore, play, and battle in their creations. However, this does not offer much in the way of a definitive story.

Previous versions of the Minecraft movie script followed a teenage girl and her friends as they set out to save their Overworld from the malevolent Ender Dragon. It isn't clear how much of that original idea still exists in the current film, but the possibilities for the Minecraft movie plot are limitless. This is essentially the main draw for the movie, and it stands to make it one of the most ambitious and original video game adaptations of all time.

Minecraft: The Movie

Based on the worldwide phenomenon Minecraft, the crafting, building, adventuring game from Mojang Studios, comes Minecraft the Movie. When a teenage girl and a ragtag group of misfits turn out to be their world's only hope against the all powerful Ender Dragon, they'll band together to save all of Overworld. The film is being directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) and so far Jason Momoa is the only rumored casting assigned. The film was originally slated for release on March 4 2022, but due to the ongoing pandemic, Warner Bros. has delayed the film indefinitely. Until now, the film has undergone several script revisions, with the original screenplay being handled by Jason Fuchs and Rob McElhenney. The film has since changed several writers and directors.
