"For me, Contact is possibly the best pop album of the 1960s. A drummer, a vocalist, and nine oscillators wired together sounds like it'll be some dry academic experimental exercise, but it couldn't be further from the truth. The drumming is funky motorik, the vocals simple pop hooks, and the oscillations provide some great backing. Kraftwerk were supposedly ahead of their time five years after Silver Apples got there first."
RYM Rough Guide for Silver Apples
Biography
Their music relied on Taylor's polyrhythmic drumming on a large, tuned drumkit, and was particularly driven by the 'Simeon', an early synthesizer built by Coxe. The instrument consisted of nine audio oscillators, connected with 86 manual controls. Although they weren't commercially successful, many electronic music enthusiasts nowadays consider them influential on acts as diverse as Suicide, Kraftwerk, Stereolab, Laika, and others.
The original line up released two albums: Silver Apples (1968) and Contact (1969). The music was driven by Taylor's propulsive drumming, and although the songs were in the usual chorus/verse pop format, Simeon's discordant tones made them unusual. Plans for a third album in 1970 fell through due to being left without a record label, and they disbanded.
When the first two albums were reissued on CD in the 1990s, interest in the Silver Apples was rekindled and Simeon reformed the band with Xian Hawkins on keyboards and Michael Lerner on drums. They released the albums Beacon (1997) and Decatur (1998). The unreleased 1970 third Silver Apples album was also released as The Garden in 1998.
In late 1998 Danny Taylor was located, and a handful of reunion shows of the original lineup were performed. Not long into the reunion, Simeon was injured seriously after their tour van was forced off the road, and plans for new music and touring were put on hold.
Danny Taylor died in 2005, leaving Simeon as the only member of the group. Simeon's Silver Apples started touring again in 2007, and released their first new album in 19 years Clinging to a Dream in September 2016.
