1998 Deep Rising - Action Packed, Great Monsters From The Deep and Wes Studi As A Villain

If you aren’t familiar with Wes Studi his portrayal of Joe Leaphorn in the PBS mystery series based on Tony Hillerman’s novels you should see them.

Treat Williams was a boat captain transporting terrorists who had torpedoes and guns who were going to hijack a cruise ship, creatures from the deep beat them to it and started killing almost everyone. The cruise ship owner was in cahoots with the robbers and played a rather cartoonish villain.

Treat William’s engineer who was a fool annoyed me.

I had fun though watching, the creatures were nicely created I loved their long tentacle look and the scene where thes3 creatures were locking hatches was quite scary. The scene in the cruise ship where Treat and Famke Jannsen were racing in a two person ski boat was very well put together. I had forgotten Famke played Jean Grey in X-Men movies.

It’s a fun movie it was sort of like a big budget Asylum Film. Treat Williams did have a huge promising career but drugs sabotaged it. His performance in Hair and Prince of The City showed his potential.

It's definitely one of my favorite monster movies, even if it leans more towards action than horror. I love the stinger at the ending when they're on the island (and not alone), and always loved seeing Famke Janssen.

I love Deep Rising and the fact that this film managed to make its way onto Roger Ebert’s “Most Hated List” is something I just don’t understand, it’s a rollicking fun adventure film that keeps its tongue firmly in cheek, the gore is well utilized and though some of the humour may fall a little flat at times the performances across the board are great.

This was basically writer/director Stephen Sommers' trial run for what he'd perfect with the "Mummy" movies.

Based on what he does here and with The Mummy films, I think he could make a great remake of Horror Express.

Just watched this and was so pleasantly surprised! A real 90s gem.

Originally intended to be a prequel to a King Kong remake, or so legend has it.

I think Sommers has stated in the past that the island is Skull Island
