Been waiting on Exhuma getting a proper release.

Hadn't heard of it and went in completely blind. Was very impressed. Definitely will be in the top 10 of the year for me.

What didn't you like about Challengers?

OP obviously has their own answer. I liked it, but I rated it it 3.5. The music was too predictable, and/because it played way too much. At a certain point, it started making the film feel goofier than it was.

I have no clue why people praise the score so much. It's just an electronic dance song, and to me, it doesn't fit a cinematic experience.

I think the goofiness was very deliberate. Definitely a bit silly. For me, what made the score great was that it started playing at the most random moments. Which gave a nice rythm to the film, almost like a dance of sorts. Pretty groovy

It wasn't random. It only plays when they have heated arguments or when they play tennis. That's why I say it got very predictable.

I also don't think it meant to be deliberately goofy. It's definitely meant to be messy. It's a popcorn movie if ever I saw one. It has cohesive writing and a strong thematic story.

Again, I think it is a good movie. If it weren't for the ovebearing music, I'd rate it higher.

Watched it twice. I could give you plenty of moments where the music starts playing randomly. Like, in the beginning, we get this shot of Shanti and Art heading to a match - the music starts playing. Then 2 min later they're sitting on the couch after the match, and Shanti goes to the next room. Art's stays there, lost in thoughts - the music starts playing again, randomly. That's just one exemple. But throughout the film, the music is used for transitions or mood shifts - from eerie piano notes to that nice, catchy beat, depending on what rythm the scenes need. It's the music that paces the story; which is pretty neatly done. And refreshing.

The 3 main characters were just so unlikable and emotionally immature. They were frustrating to watch. In Love Lies Bleeding all of the characters were pretty shitty people too, but they were all awesome characters and entertaining to watch. Idk, that's just my take. Probably doesn't help that I'm not a fan of sports either.

It's nice to hear your thoughts. I'm a fan of sports too, and I was very happy with the movie. The tennis film genre is a very small pond and I think Challengers is quite the big fish - finally, a sports drama that isn't a bland feel-gooder or an Oscar-hungry biopic. It's been a while.

I hear what you're saying though. I agree that the characters are rather immature and selfish. I disagree with them being "bad" though. I think they're bad for each other. But otherwise, they're just nuanced, imperfect individuals; and they felt pretty fleshed out to me. Arguably, Patrick was quite okay - honest to himself and others.

I see it as a bromance and a love letter to tennis (the energy, the passion, the thrills). Quite refreshing. But hell; you watched LOTR this week, it's hard to compete with that.
