I thought it would be interesting to see what your favorite size of Pflueger Medalist is. I realize that the size depends on what line you're using and what you're fishing for, but if you had to chose a favorite to say "this is the peak of the line" which size would you point to?

I'm not including the 1300 or 1500 series, as they're sized equivilent to the predominant 1400 series.

So, again, the question is, which Medalist size is the one that you think is the sweet spot?

As you mentioned, this is very much dependent upon line size. However, I chose the 1494 as I consider it the most versatile: handle a wide variety of line sizes and not so bad weight-wise.

I believe the voting will pan out that way, as well.

Looks-wise, and collector desirability, I think a round-line-guard (pre '50) 1495-1/2 is the bee's knees.

I think you're right, but I've found homes for the 1495 on my 5wt through 8wt rods.

That's my vote.

I find the 1/2 sizes to be asethically wrong to me.

The 1494 would work with the majority of rods I most often fish.

Have owned a few over the years but am 1494-less at this time.
I would really prefer a 1594 ... got one you would like to sell?

Until a few months ago, I only had 1492 and 1492 1/2 reels with later probably getting the most use. But over the past six months, I've added a 1494 1/2, 1594 1/2 and 1496 1/2. Of that bunch, only the 1496 1/2 has seen action in the trenches so far. We'll see in future, if the 1492 1/2 gets displaced from it's top spot or not.

I've had every size but the 1492 and 1492 1/2 as these, despite the same name, are really a different reel and I just don't care for fixed click reels. The 1495 and '95 1/2 are great reels, too, but not so much for the mid-line weights. Same for the 1498, often used as a trolling reel back in the day. I bet if sales figures were available, the edge would go to the 1494, the ideal palm-of-the-hand midsize trout reel. That's all I have now, not even a 1494 1/2 anymore although it is a great DT 6 reel. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11307&p=71423&hilit=assuming+you+use+RHW#p71423

For standard trout rods, the 1494 might be the best choice. (Shown below with all of the One Pfoot mods.)

I like clickers in #4/5/6 weights, and am LHW only;
so I voted for the 1495.

Great reel for #6/7 weights.

I voted for the 1495. I fish mostly 6-7 weight lines and the 1494 is too light for most of my rods.

I prefer clickers for trout fishing but for warm water a Medalist seems just right (1495).

I voted for the 1494, based solely on the trout fishing size. I prefer the round "DIAMOLITE Line Guard" to the rectangular, but both style reels are very nice and perform as well or better as any others.

I have 3 1494s and a 1495 now, and if the 1494 would just take a full DT 5 with some backing, id be in heaven, and wouldnt need the 1495, as I prefer the smaller 1494's looks. All of mine are the rectangular line guard, Akron ones ... someday, Ill get a round guard one. A WF 5 or 6 fits on a 1494 fine, and I dont like the 1/2 sizes.

That was fast.

I'm glad you are are having fun with these. Are they set up as Left Hand Retrieve or Right Hand Retrieve? Have you had a chance to fish them?

All are set up as RHW, and i will leave them that way, I dont mind switching hands to reel, I did so with spinning rods for many years. I havent had the chance to do anything but cast in a park near my house, as between the weather and work, time is tight. I managed to get 2 for 1 auction, and then managed to snag the other 2 with well-timed snipes; I dont think I spent over 100 dollars for all 4. Theyre not perfect, with worn paint and such, and my 1495 dosent click when the drag works, due to a stuck pawl, but theyre quite nice, servicable reels, and I dont imagine I will see any need to replace them. It helps that I simply love how they look.

I am looking forward to fishing with them, I will probably use the 1495 on my FF75, and 1494s on my others, plus a spare, I suppose.

Amanda

I'm with Ron, the 1495 1/2 is the best looking of the bunch, dang near perfect. But I voted 1495, mostly cause there are sooo many of them, I have them spooled with dozens of diff lines from 5wts to 10wts.

I bought a 1498 off eBay that is in verry nice condition. I have not used it yet but figured it may make a nice steel head or Saltwater reel someday.

since you use the word like, I don't like RC and I don't like Martin SS.
I've seen too many rubs of the afterthought spools on the reel face frame.

Since the voting panned out correctly, 1494 is the most useful Medalist

I have few but this one is by far my favorite. 1495 1/2 with new foot and balancer just works like a charm, i love this reel.

Did they ever make a model like the 1496 in lhw. I would love that size on 8 1/2' rods.

My 1494's fit a full DT5F and quite a bit of backing. They are what I use on most of my glass rods. I have the 1495 1/2 w/round line guide and it is a cool reel. The feet fit all of my vintage glass well but have to move on to other reels with my newer rods. I like the 95's but mostly use the 94's

I voted for the 1494 but I also like the 1495 1/2.
