How The Young Ones Changed Comedy

How The Young Ones Changed Comedy ★★★½

"Guys! Guys! Look at us! Squabbling, bickerrring, like children! What's happening to us? We never used to be like this!"
"Yes we did."
"Yeah, he's right, Rick. We've always been like this."

Absolute class, and one of only a handful of visual media moments that genuinely changed my life. I first came across these guys as a spotty teenager in the early 80s, and felt instantly at home with Rick, Vyv, Neil, Mike and a host of talented British standup acts. The Young Ones is a TV show that changed the course of not just comedy, but the type of show that young people would have access to for years to come.

As a documentary, this provides a good summary of the backstory for each of the characters and writers, and is filled with moments of pure brilliance. These days, The Young Ones can be found on YouTube... I've a feeling you had to be there at the time to truly appreciate the wonderment of it all, but I just watched the whole thing again and found it just as funny today as it ever was.

RIP People's Poet.
Still miss you Rik.
