Vivian was the daughter of Christopher and Maud Burey. Her parents worked in catering in Philadelphia. She met Thurgood Marshall at age 18, while she was a student at the University of Pennsylvania and he was a student at nearby Lincoln University. They married while she was still a student. Vivian had several miscarriages during their marriage and never delivered any children.
Vivian worked as a secretary in Baltimore and in the mid-1940s at the NAACP office in New York City. In the 1950s Vivan was diagnosed with flu or pleurisy, but was sick for months and it was eventually revealed she had lung cancer. She died of the disease on February 11, 1955, her 44th birthday.[1]
