"The Mighty Quinn," (1989). Director Carl Schenkel--
Tarzan and the Lost City
, here offers up a charming, full-color portrait of lush Caribbean life; a danceable reggae soundtrack, and a reasonably suspenseful police procedural/crime thriller in this underrated mystery. A prominent local businessman has been murdered, and island police chief Xavier Quinn (Denzel Washington--
Devil in A Blue Dress
) discovers that his boyhood pal Maubee (Robert Townsend --
Hollywood Shuffle
), who has been clocked locally carrying around a briefcase full of ten thousand dollar American bills, is the prime suspect. But wait a minute - there are no ten thousand dollar bills, are there? Still, Quinn must try to arrest Maubee, and that's no easy task. From a witty script by Hampton Fancher (
Blade Runner (Five-Disc Complete Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray
]), this tight - 98 minutes--, filmed-in-Jamaica picture offers many pleasures.
It's got a star filled cast, among other things. Aside from Washington and Townsend, it gives us James Fox (
The Golden Bowl
) as Thomas Elgin, the island's most prominent hotelier, and Mimi Rogers (
The Rapture
) as his wife Hadley. M. Emmet Walsh, (BLADE RUNNER),gives us another sharply-drawn bad guy as Fred Miller. Sheryl Lee Ralph(
Pastor Jones: Chronicles
) radiates charm as Quinn's estranged wife Lola. TV star Esther Rolle (
Good Times - The Complete Sixth Season
)is Ubu Pearl, local voodoo sorceress/snake charmer. Norman Beaton is Governor Chalk, former poultry inspector.
One thing the film doesn't have, unfortunately, is English subtitles --while it offers them in Spanish and French-- for the film's strong Caribbean accents are not so easy for all of us to understand. Luckily for me, I am very fond of this movie, have watched it many times and know what's going on. But it is wondrous to me how so many American actors have managed to pick up these so-thick accents--are they possibly dubbed? Never mind. Any film that gives us the young Denzel Washington taking off his crisp white shirt in these lush settings is one I am willing to watch repeatedly. You might want to catch it yourself.

Cool film

I thought it was a good film representing early work by Denzel Washington. What made it even better were additional quirky characters

Hidden Gem
Revisado en los Estados Unidos el 17 de mayo de 2022
This an enjoyable film, it shows off the charisma and screen presence of Denzel Washington. The irony is that at the time this movie came out Robert Townsend was a bigger star on TV, he is a delight in this film I always thought this would have made a great TV series

This features a different side of Denzel, it is fun, interesting and transports you to a bigoted island in the sun
Revisado en los Estados Unidos el 2 de mayo de 2014
OK so the film isn't for everybody and I probably missed the meaning of it. I did however like the feel of a carib island, and the interesting people involved in this murder mystery. Denzel plays a police officer who has to deal with a murder of a white islander and is hampered by bigoted whites who are incharge of this island. Also when it not trying to give a message out the people and stars are unique and it becomes fun to watch. I don't know if Denzel sang "The Mighty Quinn" but it was nice listening and watching him play a piano as well as sing. The rest of the crew were great fits making it seem so real. BOTTOM LINE it's kind of old, the plot was thin but it is a enjoyable film. As long as you watch it for enjoyment it's great.
