Not only is this an incomplete line-up of The dB's (without Chris Stamey) but original member Gene Holder is also missing.
As a result, the shortcomings already noticeable on the band's previous three records with an amputated lineup - only Chris Stamey was absent on 'Like This' and 'The Sound of Music' - are here all too visible.
Peter Holsapple is in full command and wrote all the songs but one, a cover of The Kinks' 'This Is Where I Belong'.
Trouble is, his songwriting chops have lost their edge so that most of the songs are laborious and uninspired, not to mention his lacklustre vocal performance.
As a matter of fact, the first three tracks are enjoyable but the rest goes from average to very bad.
A real disappointment although I perfectly knew when this album was released that The dB's without Chris Stamey were the shadow of the great band they once had been (and might be again since their 2012 comeback album is excellent).

I believe these are tunes from an aborted follow up to Sound of Music. By far their worst.

Nothing horrible here, but overall this sounds more like a collection of demos than a proper album. There are a few nice tunes that touch upon the glories of dB's past, but most tracks are somewhat forgettable. Still worthwhile for hardcore dB's fans, but only for hardcore dB's fans.

I would probably only recommend this to hardcore fans of the dB's. I'm a fan so I did get a kick out of listening to these extremely loose and unprofessional sounding roots rockin' tunes. Which doesn't mean they are that good, focused or remotely representative of the fizzy power pop the dB's made their own. Enter at your own risk, then.

Ya know, the db's are renowned for their Chilton/Byrds inspired guitar pop. After a five year hiatus, the bands reuninion resulted in Paris Avenue, an album that finds them staying true to course for another album full of light guitar catchy pop. Paris Avenue doesn't really offer anything inspiring. Still, it's a solid addition to any collection.
