I admit that my sweet husband purchased the Descendants 3 film for me as a gift/treat to me around the August 12, 2019 timeframe and of course I appreciated it, especially because I had purchased and enjoyed the first 2 films. The Descendants 3 film has a multiple number of uplifting elements to the third film despite some of the somber moments of the plot; for instance, the viewers get shown an important family origin of Mal’s background which influences her character evolution/development, the continuing dynamics involving Ben and Mal and their friendships involving the multiple other characters in the film: Carlos, Evie, Jay, Jane, unexpected alliances involving multiple other characters relating to the identity of the villian, and much more. The plot elements that were part of the conclusion of Descendants 3 had a very moving and healing vibe, I am tempted to explain more why though I intuitively feel moved to be considerate of anyone viewing this review who still wants to watch Descendants 3. It is better to at least try to watch Descendants 2 in order to understand part 3 better, though Descendants 3 is also a fun standalone film if a movie viewer who is completely new to the Descedants series enjoys fantasy type of movies.

As an adult buying this movie for my spawn, I rolled my eyes as I hit the purchase button. The narration at the beginning was cheesy, the fact that they (spoiler alert) got engaged at 16 after knowing each other like six months was disturbing (but that’s actually a lengthy courtship by Disney standards), so I settled in for almost two hours of sheer misery.

Then I tapped my foot to the music. Bounced. Bopped, even.

Yep, this movie is cheesy and over the top, nonsensical and kid-tastic...but it’s cute and the songs are catchy as hell. It’s not 4 stars for its cinematic achievement and priceless contribution to film...it’s 4 stars because those damn songs are STILL rolling around in my head.
