Northampton church celebrates milestones

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish, 2181 Washington Ave., Northampton, celebrated two milestones June 12.

With a large attendance of parishioners at the centennial celebration, there was also a silver anniversary recognition for the Rev. Monsignor Thomas P. Koons’ 25th anniversary of his ordination.

The event began noon with a Mass and concluded 4 p.m. The event had large, comfortable tents covering the band stand, a meal-serving area and a fellowship tent with tables and chairs in case Mother Nature chose to baptize the event with rain.

The Rev. Monsignor Stephen J. Radocha participated in the accolades of both the parish and Koons.

Flirtin with the Mob entertained the crowd with their up-tempo, modern music.

Grumpy’s BBQ Roadhouse, of Mechanicsville, was the food vendor at the celebration. The food included ribs that could also be served as a sandwich and roast barbecue chicken, macaroni salad, coleslaw and more. Beer and nonalcoholic beverages and desserts were also served, along with two decorated cakes.

Slovak, Austrian-Hungarian and German people immigrated to the Lehigh Valley around the 20th century. Many of these voluntary European transplants settled in Northampton and surrounding hamlets to work in the cement and garment industries, open shops and restaurants and raise their families.

Many were Roman Catholics who built their homes and churches. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was one of these houses of worship. The church was founded in 1922.

The parish boasts a beautiful, must-see custom stained glass window and doors at the front of the church that tell a story about the church, surrounding communities and industries. Many agree it is a worthwhile visit to view this work of art.

The overcast sky did not diminish the fellowship and goodwill of the parishioners and others who attended this important celebratory event of both the parish and for Koons.
