""...I recommend even more strongly [then The New Anti Semitism and A New Anti Semitism?] the handbook The Case for Israel..."" (Sunday Telegraph, 5 October 2003)
""Dershowitz is especially effective at pointing to the hypocrisy of many of Israel's critics."" (The New York Times - Book Review, November 9th, 2003)
""...It should be read by all who seek to be genuinely informed on the Middle East conflict..."" (The Jewish Chronicle, 9 January 2004)
Review
"In a world in which Israel seems always to be the accused, regardless of the facts, Alan Dershowitz's defense offers an oasis of sanity and straight talk. It may be too much to hope that Israel's accusers will read this powerful and persuasive response to their charges. It is not at all too much to ask that fair-minded observers do so." ?Floyd Abrams
"Alan Dershowitz's detailed and penetrating analysis of the issues that fuel the continuing war in Israel should be read by everyone interested in reaching a fair conclusion as to how that tragic conflict should be ended. Every charge leveled by Israel's opponents is dealt with lucidly and convincingly by one of the nation's brightest minds and most effective advocates." ?Mario M. Cuomo
"This is a powerful and brilliantly argued book by a life- long champion of law, freedom, and human rights. Dershowitz faces down the Big Lies one by one and proves that Israel is not guilty of colonialism, apartheid, or "Nazism." Anyone who cares about Israel?and about the truth?will find this essential, even life-saving reading." ?Phyllis Chesler Ph.D, author of The New Anti-Semitism: The Current Crisis and What We Can Do About It
"In this important book, as in many of his writings, Alan Dershowitz remains an ardent and courageous defender of Israel and what the law stands for." ?Elie Wiesel
"The Case for Israel is a marvelous primer for supporters of that beleaguered state who want to d efend Israel from the calamities falsely ascribed to it by its worldwide enemies. Dershowitz has summarized those false accusations and provided the facts, enabling the reader to respond to the anti-Semites and those who are hostile to Israel. More than a great read, it is essential if you want to be equipped to defend Israel in the world of conversation and debate." ?Edward I. Koch
"The Case for Israel is indispensable reading for those of us who are deeply disturbed by the rise of anti-Semitism in American society, even on college campuses." —Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Chairman, Department of African and African-American Studies at Harvard

From the Inside Flap
Drawing on scrupulous, unbiased research and his peerless skills as an advocate, Dershowitz conclusively refutes thirty-two separate slurs, slanders, and misrepresentations that have been hurled at Israel in recent years, including:
- Israel is a colonial, imperialist state
- The Jews have always rejected the two-state solution
- The Jews have exploited the Holocaust
- Israel?s victimization of the Palestinians has been the primary cause of the Arab-Israeli conflict
- Israel created the Arab refugee problem
- Israel tortures Palestinians
- Israel?s targeted assassinations of terrorist leaders are unlawful
- Israel is the "prime" human rights violator in the world
- Universities should divest from Israel and boycott Israeli scholars
In demolishing these charges, Dershowitz documents how Israel was founded with the blessing of the United Nations?and how it was Arabs, not Israelis, who initiated the
cycle of violence that still persists today. He proves that the division of Palestine between Israel and the Palestinians has long been accepted by Israel and rejected by most Arabs. He demonstrates why Israeli actions in the West Bank and Gaza are not motivated by territorial ambitions, but by the very real sense that Israel is under attack. And he shows how critics of Israel gloss over the terrorism, human rights abuses, and antidemocratic ideologies of other regimes in the region, substituting bigotry and veiled anti-Semitism for objective analysis. Well reasoned, hard-hitting, and provocative, The Case for Israel is essential reading for anyone who cares about Israel and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
From the Back Cover
?Mario M. Cuomo
"The Jewish nation of Israel stands accused in the dock of international justice. The charges include being a criminal state, the prime violator of human rights, the mirror-image of Nazism, and the most intransigent barrier to peace in the Middle East. Throughout the world?from the chambers of the United Nations, to the campuses of universities?Israel is singled out for condemnation, divestment, boycott, and demonization. Its leaders are threatened with prosecution as war criminals. Its supporters are charged with dual loyalty and parochialism.
"The time has come for a proactive defense of Israel to be offered in the court of public opinion. In this book, I offer such a defense?not of every Israeli policy or action, but of its basic right to exist, to protect its citizens from terrorism, and to defend its borders from hostile enemies. I also try to present a realistic picture of Israel, warts and all, as a flourishing multiethnic democracy, similar in many ways to the United States, that affords all of its citizens?Jews, Muslims, and Christians?far better lives and opportunities than those afforded by any Arab or Muslim nation. Most important, I argue that those who single out Israel for unique criticism not directed against countries with far worse human rights records are themselves guilty of international bigotry. . . . But when the Jewish nation is the only one criticized for faults that are far worse among other nations, such criticism crosses the line from fair to foul, from acceptable to anti-Semitic."

One thing that really struck me as I read this book is how it seems that many of the arguments that Palestinians make against Israel, such as their assertion that Israel seeks to exterminate the Palestinian people, are actually a projection of the Palestinians’ own attitudes — for there are many Palestinians, even a majority, who desire nothing short of the extermination of the state of Israel and the genocide of the Jewish people.
One other thing that stood out to me in this book is that most, if not all, of the arguments that Dershowitz deals with in this book are the same arguments we hear today, even though this book was written twenty years ago.
In light of the rising antisemitism that we’ve seen in recent months, this book is extremely timely and helpful. I highly recommend this book for those who wish to know the truth about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
No one should be allowed to have a conversation about Israel without reading this.
There would only be ONE SIDE to the discussion - a well-balanced, factual, and balanced view that ISRAEL has been right about EVERYTHING.
Dershowitz uses plain English and provides many statistics to argue against the accusations that are regularly fired against Israel. At times, the evidence he uses and responses provided are a little short on detail but still eye opening and valid enough to reject an accusation or to at least go seeking more information. Furthermore, he shows that we truly live in a world of political double standards and that in our own lifetime, aiming for a compromised outcome may be better (more realistic) than trying to achieve a utopian ideal.
Whether you are a first year politics student or just someone who is preplexed by all the anti-Israel rhetoric that exists then you will find this book hard to put down and to not refer back to in the future.
Also recommended is The Case For Peace. While it repeats some of the barriers to peace mentioned in The Case For Israel, it does give a basic idea of what a future noncontiguous Palestinian state could look like, and Dershowitz also responds to some of his most passionate critics. Why Blame Israel? by English academic Neill Lochery is also worth a read. Lochery comes across as being less generous towards Israel than Dershowitz but he does still point out how criticism against Israel has often been misplaced.
Bennis writes a terribly one-sided view point about the battle for Palestine. Bennis even seems to imply Israel started all battles between the Israelis and the Arabs and that Palestine was land stolen by the evil Jews. I believe most historians will argue otherwise. The Jews worldwide have been abused and pushed to the bottom of society. Europe and America have grown since WWII, but the Arab world has not. Israel built an oasis out of a deserted desert. Many, not all, but too many Arabs want to eradicate the Jews and have wanted this since the birth of Mohammad who perverted the religion of Abraham into an excuse to violently subjugate all who refused to bend to his desire to be ruler over the land. History continues to be rewritten by many to suit their chosen philosophies, but history is history is history if one looks to the facts and the proof and not the perverted lies. I am not Jewish, but my wife is Jewish, my best friend of 50 years is Jewish and I take the bending of historical facts regarding the suffering of the Jewish people personally. I believe the Palestinians do deserve a State of their own, but they must accept Israel and they must admit their sins. I met a branded Holocaust survivor and even though my German descent goes back to the early 1800s when my family came to the U.S.A. I found myself apologizing to her for her suffering and her families' suffering. How can anyone not feel for and believe Israel has suffered - not the Arab Palestinians - and how can anyone argue against the existence of Israel? Personally, I believe Jerusalem should be wholly part and parcel of Israel, not divided, as Jerusalem IS more Jewish than any other religion, but I do understand Islam and Christianities ties thereto as well. Still I believe Israel should have sole possession of Jerusalem; some or all Islamic States should control Mecca; and, the Christians should control Bethlehem. But then that is how I personally perceive historically a city for each faith.
Whether you are Jewish, Christian, Muslim or as I a Realist (aka: Atheist), please read this book and read it with a mindset of PEACE. This is probably one of Mr. Dershowitz's most compelling arguments set to paper.
Top reviews from other countries
The book is split into several sections, debunking some of the rubbish the far left, islamic supremacists & bleeding heart liberals spew about Israel (Noam Chomsky, Edward Said, Norman Finkelstein)
I was completely unaware of the cleansing of Jews from Arab land at the same time as the Jews were allegedly cleansing Arabs from Mandatory Palestine, and the Muslim Arab alliance with Hitler before reading this book, and I was also unaware of what a complete joke the 3rd world pressure group the UN is.
The book, along with a few others, have helped me change my mind completely about the situation between Israel and "Palestine" and I now believe that if Israel were anything other than Jewish there would have been peace a long time ago.
This book is no more "dishonest" than the drivel spouted by the likes of the extreme left -- Noam Chomsky and George Galloway, for example.
Ignore reviews that have not got "verified purchase" next to it, (I see most of the reviews rating the book 1* have not been verified purchases) and ignore the political left when it comes to this conflict.
Some other books I have read / am reading which are worth a read:
The Dhimmi: Jews and Christians Under Islam A book detailing the centuries of oppression the Jews and Christians got under Islamic rule long, long before the re birth of Israel, or any zionist movement was set up -- destroying the myth that they all lived in peace before the zionists came along.
The Legal Foundation And Borders Of Israel Under International Law: A Treatise on Jewish Sovereignty over the Land of Israel --- Israels legal case... and why Palestine is not occupied.
I look forward to visiting Israel some time in the future.
EDIT: I've noticed any books on Amazon in favour of Israel, like this one, average only 2-3 stars, but all in favour of the Arab crybabies ('Palestinians') have 4-5 star reviews. I guess the ISM / PSC and other leftist / islamic supremacists are all over the ratings
