Summary.
Victoria Williams followed Happy Come Home (1987), arranged and produced by Van Dyke Parks, with Swing The Statue (1990), an eclectic and austere collection that mixed her childish warble, elegant post-modernist studies, and personal journeys to the otherworld, while evoking Tom Petty, Van Morrison and Leonard Cohen. It was fitting that she eventually struck a stylistic balance with the chamber ambience of Musings Of A Creekdipper (1998).

Sul secondo album, Swing The Statue (Rough Trade, 1990) Williams trova l'equilibrio fra una concisione degna dell'haiku (On Time), la maestosita' del gospel (Holy Spirit), la filastrocca domestica (Why Look At The Moon) e l'affresco sociale (Summer Of Drugs, Sidewalks of the City).

To Have Known Pappy, Harry Went To Heaven, Century Plant).

Musings Of A Creekdipper (Atlantic, 1998) marks a departure from the orchestral and sophisticated feeling of Loose, just like Loose had marked a departure from its predecessor. This time accompanied by musicians like the Calexico duo, Williams shows more interest in the ambience. This time, the orchestration (cello, dulcimer, flute, clarinet, vibraphone, banjo, trumpet, etc) is used to recreate a somewhat rustic setting. Her eclectic songwriting stretches towards more and more experimental textures (Eucalyptus Tree, Allergic Boy). Her childish register warbles on elegant, post-modern studies like Periwinkle Sky and Train Song.
However, compositions like Rainmaker and Hummingbird show continuity with previous work, and Blackbirds Rise is another leg in her personal journey to the otherworld (and Grandpa In The Corn Patch is sort of a preamble to the whole series).

Water To Drink (Atlantic, 2000) mainly proves that Victoria Williams has listened to Bjork and the Portishead. Water To Drink and a few covers of jazz standards update her style with trip-hop innuendos.

Williams has also recorded several albums under the moniker THe Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers with her husband Mark Olson of Jayhawks.
