Chutney Popcorn

Chutney Popcorn ★★★

I'm a sucker for movies about family dynamics that also has a healthy dose of lesbians. Chutney Popcorn is a hidden gem about gesture of love and loyalty for family, and the interplay between how family and romantic love affect each other.

Nisha Ganatra goes full triple threat in this movie, writing, directing, and starring in this film as out lesbian Reena. It's rare to see a film that I feel like one person taking on so much feels justified to me, but she's made a unique, entertaining, and earnest film. This film has a lot of rarities in fact - especially for the 90s. it's also about a lesbian who is already out to her family, our protagonist is Indian-American, and the main lesbian character is already in a relationship.

Looking at it through contemporary eyes, the movie has pretty low production values and feels a bit dated. But still has some great heart and funny moments worth pulling this film from lesbian obscurity.
