      Wonderfalls: Season 1 Reviews

I fell in love with Fuller's quirky storytelling style and hilarious female protagonist.

It was quirky with a terrifically deadpan sense of humor and a flawless cast that included the underrated Caroline Dhavernes, Lee Pace and Katie Finneran.

The reason to watch Wonderfalls is Dhavernas. Her Jaye is appealing even when obstinate, embraceable even when she's pushing people away.

Wonderfalls...is Joan of Arcadia without God. Which is probably why I prefer it.

      Full Review | Sep 25, 2018

If the show can maintain its ability to meet Jaye on her own tart and acerbic level, it could grow into a wonderfully insane, and wonderfully unrepentant, series.

Caroline Dhavernas needs to dial it down a notch, but otherwise "Wonderfalls" is strange and entertaining and has a strong chance of evolving into a great show.

      Full Review | Sep 25, 2018

"Wonderfalls" has a lot going for it, but it's trying a tad too hard to be quirky instead of just letting the quirkiness flow.

      Full Review | Sep 25, 2018

Wittily written and packed with broad performances and snappy, inventive direction, the show's stories are resolutely low-key affairs.

      Full Review | Original Score: 8/10 | Sep 25, 2018

"Wonderfalls" is so well done, so fresh and unpredictable, and so little in thrall to conventional virtues as to make the weary reviewer prostrate with joy.

      Full Review | Sep 25, 2018

It may be too much to ask the lovely Ms. Dhavernas, who is almost never off camera, to command an hourlong drama, even with her inanimate accomplices.

      Full Review | Sep 25, 2018

The arch manner of her family members and their tart banter is nicely nasty.

      Full Review | Original Score: 7/10 | Sep 25, 2018

Despite being peopled with well-drawn characters and smart, audaciously careening scripts that induce bursts of laughter, "Wonderfalls" gives us television's -- at least network television's -- coolest female.

      Full Review | Original Score: 4/4 | Sep 25, 2018

Holland...is investigating an interesting theme: how intelligent young people cope with (by joining in, opting out of, or commenting ironically upon) the difficulties of modern life.

      Full Review | Sep 25, 2018

While it didn't reach its full potential, "Caged Bird" closes the show equivocally, with all the attendant emotions, quirks and occasional flaws that made the show such an remarkable experience.

      Full Review | Sep 25, 2018

Even though it only comprises 13 episodes, the quirky comedy's lone first season is still worth watching because it concludes with a satisfying end that doesn't completely resolve Jaye's destiny but also doesn't leave you feeling completely cheated.

      Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 25, 2018

For the most part, though, "Wonderfalls" is simply too precious for its own good, the kind of weightless artifact likely to be swept away without much of a ripple.

      Full Review | Sep 25, 2018

But like installments in a long-running sitcom, the episodes are pleasant but interchangeable, so self-contained that they could be screened in random order.
