The goalkeeper of Shakhtar and Ukraine national team has announced his international retirement

Over 15 years of playing for the national team of Ukraine, Andriy Pyatov made 102 appearances (including 24 captain apps).

How it all began

Pyatov's debut for the country’s select team took place on August 22, 2007 in a friendly match vs Uzbekistan. The 23-year-old stopper played for 90 minutes, with Ukraine winning that game 2-1. Andriy made his first competitive appearance in the UEFA Euro 2008 qualification round group stage game vs the Faroe Islands in the autumn of the same year. The match ended 5-0, being the goalkeeper’s first clean sheet with the national team.

Major international competitions

Andriy Pyatov took part in four major international tournaments. In 2006, Andriy went to the FIFA World Cup in Germany as part of the Ukraine national team. Back then, the team achieved some historic success (they reached the quarterfinals), but the young goalkeeper was the third keeper and did not appear. But already at the 2012 UEFA European Championship that was held in Ukraine and Poland, Pyatov was the first-choice goalkeeper and took part in all three matches of the group stage. Andriy was also the country’s number one keeper at the Euro 2016, boasting 270 minutes on the pitch. At that competition, he was the best goalkeeper for the number of saves in the group stage. As the first-choice keeper, Pyatov went through the entire qualifying campaign for Euro 2020, still entrusting his place to Heorhii Bushchan at the competition.

Records and achievements

Andriy Pyatov is the record holder among goalkeepers for the number of appearances for Ukraine: from 2007 to 2022 he made 102 apps. According to this indicator, he is among the top five players in the history of the national team. He also boasts the absolute achievement for the number of clean sheets – 47. Andriy also has the longest clean-sheet run in the history of the national team - 752 minutes in 2013. The goalkeeper has another interesting achievement: from June 2012 to November 2014, he made 28 appearances in a row in the starting lineup without any substitutions.

On June 11, 2022, having kept a clean sheet against Armenia (3-0), Andriy Pyatov made his last appearance for the national team of Ukraine.
