Another win for Hardik and GT

Eventually, DC finished with 157, falling short by 14 runs. DC fired in fits and starts with Pant top-scoring (43). However, unlike GT's Gill, none of them could convert starts into big scores.

Ferguson took a four-for while Shami hammered the final screw in the game with two wickets in his last over. Great start for Hardik and co.

GT one wicket away...

It is getting from bad to worse. Thakur tried to slog Rashid but was trapped in front. A curious shot, considering that was the last ball of Rashid's quota of four overs for the day.

Shami then tricked R Powell with the cutter while Khaleel was done in by hard length. DC are nine down and in trouble.

Every single time #DC seem to find the right key to unlock the door, there is #LockieFerguson to shut the door. That is how it feels.

Ferguson - GT's man of the moment

Pant and R Powell took on Tewatia by cracking a few shots. However, in this match, every single time DC seem to have found a way out of a dark tunnel, Ferguson seems to have shut the door on them. Pant top-edged a pull to backward square leg.

Axar then drove and pulled the same bowler. Just that Lockie had the last laugh as Axar was caught via a strange down leg.

126/6. DC need 46 in 5.

And then a mix-up...

Oh, a sad way to end the stand as it turns out to be a run out. Pant had nudged it into the leg-side and they tried to steal the second run. Just that Lalit Yadav was always struggling, and Manohar's throw at the non-striker's end was on the money, catching the batter short. There was as a twist as one bail had gone off early due to Shankar's foot being in contact with the stumps. Just that the other bail was on and he dislodged. There was a bit of confusion over the decision before Lalit had to walk back.

Pant, Lalit on the charge

Pant slashed and pulled, twinned with the occasional steer while Lalit slog-swept Rashid Khan to give DC renewed hope. DC need to score at a tick under 9.2 runs per over. And that is very much possible with seven wickets in hand.

Ferguson makes more dents

Lockie Ferguson too has taken a wicket via his first ball. And it was a near-perfect short ball for a batter like Shaw. The opener stays slightly leg-side of the ball, and as a result, Ferguson followed him with a pacy short delivery. The opener could only pull it to deep square leg.

Ferguson continued to pound it on a hard length and removed Mandeep Singh too. DC in trouble at 34/3.

Hardik strikes early!

Take note, India selectors. Hardik Pandya is not just bowling, but bowling inside the PowerPlay and...has picked a wicket first ball here. He's dismissed Tim Seifert and is consistently hitting late 130ks and early 140ks here.

DC need 172

In the last over. Mustafizur showed his wisdom of experience by taking a couple more scalps. His ability to take pace off with his trademark cutter once again proved to be the difference.

171 on the board. The one good point for GT is the dew seems to be less at this stadium.

Gill falls for enterprising 84

Hard length has helped Khaleel to snare another key scalp. Gill attempted to pull the left-armer but Khaleel pounded it hard enough to ensure the opener couldn't get the elevation as he smashed it to the fielder at deep midwicket.

End of a superbly paced innings.

The hard length factor

Hardik has been dislodged and it is Khaleel who has bagged the prized scalp. Khaleel did well to hit a hard length. Hardik also did well to flat bat it towards long on where R Powell grabbed it on his second attempt.

Just when GT were threatening to break free, they have lost a wicket.

Hardik, Gill look to press accelerator pedal

Hardik and Gill are trying up the ante for GT. Both the batters cracked fluent drives off Shardul Thakur in the 12th over. In the next over, Shibman also completed an aggressive fifty.

GT need to hit top gear in the slog overs to give the bowlers a competitive score to defend.

And some Kuldeep magic

Kuldeep continues to impress. Some nice flight from the wrist spinner as he induced Shankar to play across the line, only to hear the death rattle. Recently, Kuldeep's coach had talked about working on his pupil's 'spot bowling skills'.

GT are two down and in a spot of bother.

#KuldeepYadav and 'spot bowling'. Nice to see all the hard work is helping him to succeed. For me, Kuldeep at his best is still India's X-factor in limited overs. The left-arm angle is a plus point. #IPL2022 #GTvDC

Classy Gill

Shubman Gill has just shown a touch of class by cracking a slog-sweep against Axar Patel. Now that isn't an easy shot to play versus Axar as he bowls it flat rough the air, mixed with a bit of scrambled seam.

Welcome back to the IPL, Mustafizur!

He sends Matthew Wade packing in the first over. It's taken a review to bring about the early wicket but it is there. Wade looked to shuffle across and play the scoop but nicked it to Pant behind. Snicko gave enough evidence for the umpire to rule in the fielding side's favour.

Toss and Teams

Delhi Capitals have won the crucial toss and opted to field. Mustafizur has replaced Nagarkoti.

Gujarat Titans (Playing XI): Shubman Gill, Matthew Wade(w), Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya(c), David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Abhinav Manohar Sadarangani, Rashid Khan, Lockie Ferguson, Varun Aaron, Mohammed Shami

Delhi Capitals (Playing XI): Prithvi Shaw, Tim Seifert, Mandeep Singh, Rishabh Pant(w/c), Lalit Yadav, Rovman Powell, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman

Pitch report by Deep Dasgupta: Fresh pitch, it's on the corner of the square which means it is big on one side. Looks almost same as the one used in the last game. Lot of grass, firm. good cary and bounce. As a bowler if you want to survive you have to bowl the hard length. Enough pace, carry and movement for the bowler. Dew factor isn't that great here, which is why this is only venue where a team batting first has won the game. WIll be interesting to see what the captain winning the toss will do.

Prelude:

In Gujarat Titans' opening game against fellow new entrants Lucknow Super Giants, Mohammed Shami bowled with exemplary control and extracted nifty seam movement to pick up a three-for while Rahul Tewatia's pyrotechnics helped the side to chase down the target and chart a famous win.

Tonight, GT will be up against Delhi Capitals. DC too began the tournament on a winning note versus Mumbai Indians. And that too despite missing out on a few key players. DC still possess an explosive batting unit, with the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Rovman Powell, Rishabh Pant and co. in the side. Even though they would hope for a better show from their pacemen.

The one good point for both the sides is that the humidity is on the lesser side (relative terms) in Pune at 41 per cent. So there could be less dew.
