ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE'S TOP 100 FANTASY BOOKS OF ALL TIME
Winner of the Reddit/Fantasy Award for Best Debut Fantasy Novel
The Omehi people have been fighting an unwinnable war for almost two hundred years. The lucky ones are born gifted. One in every two thousand women has the power to call down dragons. One in every hundred men is able to magically transform himself into a bigger, stronger, faster killing machine.
Everyone else is fodder, destined to fight and die in the endless war.
Young, gift-less Tau knows all this, but he has a plan of escape. He's going to get himself injured, get out early, and settle down to marriage, children, and land. Only, he doesn't get the chance.
Those closest to him are brutally murdered, and his grief swiftly turns to anger. Fixated on revenge, Tau dedicates himself to an unthinkable path. He'll become the greatest swordsman to ever live, a man willing to die a hundred thousand times for the chance to kill the three who betrayed him.
The Rage of Dragons launches a stunning and powerful debut epic fantasy series that readers are already calling "the best fantasy book in years."

Tau is the protagonist and the main POV except for just a few instances. Its a coming of age, warrior school story line that becomes the path that Tau's character follows. While that's a common story telling approach, Evan did it in a very unique and believable way for Tau. Its a full-on revenge arc for Tau and along the way his character is a little frustrating to read at times with the decisions he makes, but that's why I liked him so much. He wasn't perfect and didn't always do, think or say the right thing. But he was loyal, loved his friends deeply, earnest and driven.
The cast around him was very good and several were fleshed out pretty well and you cared about them and saddened when some of the ones you became invested in were killed. Because there is lots of killing, lots of fighting, lots of duels and lots of close quarter combat. Give the book a few chapters while it builds its story, because once it gets rolling, its a sprint to the end with action, surprises, reveals and big story turns.
Its very exciting and action packed read and I read the last 75% of the book in 2 days. I couldn't put it down once Tau got in warrior school. While there is lots of fighting, there are also good relationships that are created that give some balance to the violence that Tau always finds himself in the middle of. He does care for his friend and finds love, but struggles with how to address that while wanting to stay single-minded and focused on his goal.
I really enjoyed this book and its great to see an African inspired fantasy done so well. The magic system was also very unique and well done. The Isihogo is something that you will learn about and enjoy and fear at the same time. Evan revealed more and more through the characters about how it worked, but only when it served the story. I enjoyed the methodical paced explanation of the magic system The Gifted, female mages, used through "seeing" them use it rather than an information dump from one character to another about how the whole thing works. Did I mention there are dragons and demons? Once you get to the end of the book, you will enjoy the rich and complex story that Evan created and the next 3 books will carry on.
I can't wait to read the 2 book in the series, The Fires of Vengeance and see how Tau deals with the aftermath of how Rage of Dragons ended.
The depth in the world-building is amazing - the caste system alone is worth the price of admission. Luckily, there’s a handy glossary at the back for you to peruse if (when) you become lost. The difference between the classes is well portrayed. Not only are the physical differences clearly detailed, but how the upper classes view the lower as little more than chattel is made very obvious
The magic system is nicely done, as the various different mages have to tap in to their hell to draw on its power. This, as you can well imagine, is fraught with danger. Of course, in a militarized culture such as this one, there isn’t really an option to refuse your “calling”. Some of the abilities of the mages include getting soldiers to “hulk out,” and (my favourite) enervate, which sends enemies (and sometimes allies) into the demon zone temporarily, rendering them incapable of fighting
The plot has many strands, some of which are stronger than others. The basic plot, Tau rising through the ranks, is not dissimilar to many other books of this ilk, but there is a terrific secondary plot twist midway through that rattles Tau to his core, and leads him to question his motives
Don’t get me wrong about the main plot. While it certainly has a whiff of “chosen one” about it, this is no Hogwarts-type plot. Instead, Tau’s toils in sweat and blood to make his way up the ranks, and the methods he stoops to achieve his goals threaten his very sanity, as well as his life. Remember he is of one of the weaker classes, and has to find a way to compete at the highest level
The action scenes in this book, and there are many, are visceral and exciting, and all are different. Tau is the obvious hero, but he can’t do it on his own and the other people in his unit bring their own skills to the table - Tau is not the be all and end all. In fact, his fellow soldier Hadith, the brains of the operation, was probably my favourite character, and had his own motivations for striving for success.
Verdict
Easily one of the finest books I read in 2019, and by a debut author to boot. If you haven’t read it already, you should probably get on that. Oh yeah, did I mention there were dragons?
POWERFUL, thats the word which came to my mind after completing this book. I was simply blown away by it and have given an extra star. That's right, 6 stars!
This book is very fast paced, it starts with a war and never lets its pace dip. Characters are so well etched out that you root for them, each being indispensable for fighting against the antoganist. Jayyed, Hedith, Zuri, Udauk, Kellen Okar, these prominent characters stay with you and the best among them is the hero TAU TAFARI.
I know the word hero is rarely used nowadays but that's what Tau is here : a HERO. Tau's journey is breathtaking, the obstacles he faces and how he towers over them is simply spectacular. Insurmountable odds are faced by the group of seemingly good people in the story and the way the story develops to show them inching towards their common goal is praiseworthy.
Overall, it was very hard to put this book down.
The combination of action, intrigue, mystery and the emotional depth makes this fantasy novel unique.
Debutant author Evan Winter has weaved an epic tale and is clearly a skillful master storyteller.
Eagerly looking forward to the next installment.
