Every franchise has a one-hit-wonder. That one season where it comes out of nowhere and you think that player is ready to take the full step forward, but he doesn’t and that’s the end of it.

The Philadelphia 76ers have a few like that that people can remember, but in this edition, we’re focusing on one guy in particular and that is Dana Barros.

Yes, the guy who wore the number 3 before Allen Iverson made it a legendary number played in Philadelphia for two short seasons in the ’90s when the Sixers were in the doldrums. Yet, there was one season that surprised everybody and he even had a big memorable game to boot.

The 1994-95 season was bad for Philadelphia as they finished 24-58 continuing their rebuild. However, Barros came out of nowhere to average 20.6 points, 7.5 assists, and 3.3 rebounds while shooting 46.4% from deep and being named an All-Star. He finished third in the league in 3-point shooting percentage, 18th in points per game, 11th in assists, and 10th in steals.

He also scored a career-high 50 points against an elite Houston Rockets team.

The season is underrated due to the fact that the Sixers just weren’t very good at the time. A lot of fans would prefer to not remember the ’90s pre-Iverson in general. Also, once Iverson finished up an incredible Hall of Fame career, the number 3 became synonymous with the 6-foot guard from Georgetown, and fans forgot about any player who wore the number before The Answer.

Barros’ terrific season earned him a 6-year $22 million deal with the Boston Celtics in 1995, but he was never able to replicate the success he had in Philadelphia. It was the true definition of a one-hit-wonder season.
