Colgate University Reviews
Rating 3.59 out of 5 1,046 reviews
While my experience with classes at Colgate has been pretty good, the academics are sadly the only good thing about the university. The food is abysmal and the meal plan is overpriced, and there is almost nothing else to eat in the local area. The housing is also notably bad. I was stuck in a gate house triple my freshman year because they did not have enough housing despite their 1 billion dollar endowment. Gate house is an old temporary housing unit that is quite literally falling apart. There was black mold in the showers and the carpets were littered with various stains. I was charged the same price to live there as students living in other dorms.
In terms of student life, The entire social scene revolves around Greek life, which also happens to be incredibly exclusive. Since Colgate is in the middle of nowhere, this makes it feel extremely isolating.
There are other liberal arts colleges with great academics that do not have the pitfalls of Colgate. Don’t come here.

I applied to Colgate because it was a smaller liberal arts college with D1 sports and a smart, driven student body. I had a wonderful experience, I found amazing friends, and I flourished in my career because of the connections I made at Colgate.
I'm a current biochem sophomore student at Colgate and I'm very happy with my choice to go here.
It's a small school that manages to feel bigger than it is, there's always something to do on campus, and you never have to be bored. I was afraid of a middle of no where school going into it but, Colgate knows that and has more than enough on campus going on to get involved with.
It is very academically rigorous for some majors, especially in the STEM area but your professor are so willing to help out and office hours do a lot for you.
I am super involved in the arts on campus specifically in theater. There is a lot of both university run and student run programs as well as so many different dance groups
In terms of the party scene it can be really fratty, but also there's plenty of people who are not involved and they are not judged for it. I was also scared it would be too much of a party school but its not hard to avoid.
I would not have picked a different school doing it again.
