Positives:
-the worldbuilding (not apparent much in this first book but greatly expands as the series continues)
-the detailed progression/cultivation system (starts LitRPG-heavy with quantified stats and such but later expands into multiple types of cultivation. It's much more detailed than most of the other series in the genre)
-the writing (NOT only a positive, but what it does well besides worldbuilding is that a certain gravitas and epicness is sometimes present in the writing. I'm mostly thinking of certain events that take place later in the series. The author "can" be very good at foreshadowing. It also has a certain sense of humor that appeals to me. It's slight and subtle, dark, and a bit sarcastic at times).
-the main character appeals to me (unpopular opinion maybe, but I like his aggressiveness and directness. He has morals but can also be ruthless which is fitting to the ruthless multiverse that he finds himself in. He isn't much of a planner most of the time, but he doesn't typically make dumb decisions--like letting an enemy escape to cause problems later--if he has a choice).
The negatives:
-the writing (again). Sometimes a thesaurus can be useful. But Zac's (the MC's) extremely extreme massively massive tool, er, I mean attribute pool is extremely massive to be sure. Well, to be fair, he does have a massive tool (what? I'm referring to his spirit tool axe...) There is also at least one instance in a later book when an enormous shy-shattering cyborg-woman character spouts off a huge amount of exposition, and while the foreshadowing that this monolouging character delivers is intriguing, it's poorly written. She is supposedly speaking to the main character but she uses a bunch of terms that neither he, or the reader, has any context for understanding.
-the writing (again). While some of the series arcs are really well done, others drag a bit. There is one particular arc that I skip entirely on rereads (and yes, I like this series enough, overall, that I'm currently starting my second reread).
-the writing (last time). While I mentioned that I liked the main character and I also like a few of the side characters, characterization is not a particularly strong point of the author and the characters are fairly basic (but to me basic is much preferred to bad, or annoying).
So, it's worth the read. Nothing wrong with it, and I love that so far harems have been avoided. There are betters out there, so my top 3 series have remained well in place. I don't know how appropriate it is to mention them here, so I won't. But know there is one with a similar "earth becomes yet another world in an RPG multiverse", with much more humor, character, and pacing. And another "Protagonist gets sucked into another world" with even more humor and a great skill/progression system. So enjoy, and keep exploring!
This is not why you are taking time to read my review however. This is not a lengthy breakdown or detailed insight into writing methods. This is a whole hearted thumbs up to read this series in it's entirety (just finished book 12).
The aforementioned series left me hanging. Just like any good RPG (yes, I am referring to games here), I never want them to end. I want to keep leveling up and witness what my new gains can afford me. This series does not disappoint in that regard. In all these books of this genre, why give us a fleshed out system and then only take the characters half way to max level? It is a maddening tease that I have just gotten used to, thinking to myself, if I get half of what the author is hinting to, I will be happy, right...? *nod, nod - wink, wink*
Yeah, no. Ultimately, it is like jumping into a book series that is half done after several years knowing certainly that the books that are coming will at least partially out pace your reading speed. Guilty authors, you know who you are. You have such time and energy put into a system that you do not get to watch your protagonist explore fully, which is just such a let down.
Enter this series. 12 books and we are well into the leveling process as depicted. This is so satisfying. Did I mention too that we are currently getting 600+ pages at a pop in the 4 to 6 month range? Also, a good part of the system mechanics are Dao related, which is a unique twist to others that I have read.
What are you waiting for, you have 12 books to plow through, 13 is out in less than three months, PLEASE SUPPORT THIS AUTHOR! Seriously good reading, simply can not put it down!
