It was a sad Mother’s Day for Rashida and Kidada Jones after the death of their mother, actress Peggy Lipton, on Saturday, following a battle with cancer. Lipton was 72.

Her daughters issued a statement to the Los Angeles Times, writing: “She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side. ... We feel so lucky for every moment we spent with her.”

Kidada and Rashida are Lipton’s only children, shared with Quincy Jones, to whom she was married from 1974 to 1989. The two remained close friends, and Jones referred to Lipton as his greatest love in the Grammy-winning 2018 documentary, Quincy (produced and directed by Rashida). Best known for her iconic roles in the 1960s hit television show The Mod Squad and later, Twin Peaks, Lipton was still amassing acting credits as recently as 2017, when she revived her role as waitress Norma Jennings for the reboot of Twin Peaks.

“We can’t put all of our feelings into words right now, but we will say: Peggy was and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond,” her daughters said in their shared statement. “She will always be a part of us.”
