John Tingle: Founder of Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party dies at the age of 90

The party was founded 30 years ago.

John Saxon Tingle, who founded the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party, has died at the age of 90 overnight.

Before entering politics, he worked as a radio and TV journalist at the ABC in Sydney in the 1950s & 1960s - later working on commercial stations including 2UE, 2UW (now KIIS 1065), 2SM, 3AW and 4BK (now B105 FM).

Tingle formed the Shooters Party on 2 May 1992, 30 years ago.

He was elected to the NSW Legislative Council in 1995 and was re-elected in 2003 before retiring 3 years into his second term after aggressive prostate cancer "forced his hand to retire," according to Port Macquarie News.

At the time, he ranked his greatest political achievements as "getting six pieces of legislation through including the Home Invasion Bill which gives occupants of a house a parliament-guaranteed right of self-defence.

His "most unpleasant memory" was the aftermath of the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, where he & his wife got death threats for several months."

He is survived by his 3 children - Peter, Sally and Laura.

Laura Tingle, who works for the ABC's 7.30, confirmed the news of his death on Twitter this morning.

The Shooters Party became the Shooters and Fishers Party in 2009, and then gained its current name in 2016.

The party currently has 2 MPs in the NSW Legislative Assembly (Roy Butler in Barwon & Philip Donato in Orange), 2 in the NSW Legislative Council (Mark Banasiak & Robert Borsak) and 1 in the Victorian Legislative Council (Jeff Bourman in the Eastern Victoria Region).
