Mary-Jean's Obituary

Mary Jeannette (Mary-Jean) Leugers (nee Test), our much-beloved mother, Grammy, and Great-Grammy Ge-Ge, passed away on April 27, 2024, at age 89.

Mary-Jean was born May 28, 1934, in Wyoming, Ohio, to Jeannette Test (nee Sweitzer), and Starley N Test. She was the youngest of 6: the little sister to John, Bob, Andre, Starley, and Noel Test. She received sacraments and was a devoted parishioner at St James of The Valley Church in Wyoming, Ohio, where she attended grade school and was Double-Dutch champion. She attended Mount Notre Dame High School (Cincinnati 1948-1953), where she excelled at Latin, and went on to Our Lady of Cincinnati College (1953-1956), where she received a teaching degree. She taught 3rd grade at St James until she met Joseph V Leugers (also from Cincinnati), and they were married June 15, 1957, at St James.

Mary-Jeans greatest accomplishment was raising 7 children: Mary E (Beth), Joseph A, Paul J, Jeannette L, Katherine A, Francis J, and Michael P, in 7 different homes (in 3 different states), in 25+ years, following career opportunities our father, Joseph, pursued. Their final home in Brighton, Michigan, is where Mom was finally able to put down roots, and she (and dad) were devoted parishioners at St Patrick’s Church, where Mom belonged to Befrienders, Garden Club, Divine Mercy, Bible Study, and finally, Bridge groups, which she faithfully participated in until age 85.  Mom’s passion (and skill) was playing Bridge, which began in college and followed her to every home, and she belonged to several Bridge groups in Brighton, until age 85.

Mary-Jean (AKA Mom, Grammy, Great Grammy GeGe) will be sorely missed, not only by her children, but by her 11 grandchildren: Greg and Andrew (Beth and Gregory E Barrett), Joe Jr, and Jamie (Joseph and Kim Carlton), Meghan and Charlie (Paul and Christine Guendhardt), Martin, Maureen, Rebecca and Emma (Jeannette and Carl Wurster), and Henry (Katy and Jeff Reich), but by her 10 Great Grandchildren: Preston, Lillian, William, Joey, Sophie, Hazel, Meredith, Brynn, Luca, and new-born Leo.

We will miss her love of Bridge, her wry sense of humor and grammatical acuity, her red lipstick, her chocolate chip cookies, and most of all her laughter, and her faithful love for and devotion to all of us.

Mary-Jean was preceded in death by her beloved son, Francis on Jan 1, 1971, her beloved Grandson, Jamie (beloved son of Joseph and Kim, and beloved brother of Joe Jr) on Oct 3, 2008, her devoted husband, Joe on June 15, 2011, and her beloved son Paul on July 24, 2013.

Visitation will be from 2-5 pm Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Keehn-Griffin Funeral Home, 706 W Main St., Brighton, MI 48116.

Funeral Mass Friday, May 10, 2024, at 10:30 am at St. James of The Valley Church (411 Springfield Pike, Wyoming, OH 45215), immediately followed by a procession to Gate of Heaven Cemetery (11000 Montgomery Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45249), where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Joe.
