Luxair

Luxair is a regional airline based in Luxembourg, a country sandwiched between France, Belgium, and Germany. Its geography makes it attractive to base a regional airline. Unlinked other airlines on this list; Luxair is non-aligned, which makes the carrier's relationship with the Lufthansa Group even more unique.

Luxembourg's capital city is within an hour's flight from Paris, London, and Frankfurt, critical financial hubs on the continent. Fittingly, the airline has direct flights to the British and French capitals, which they serve with their fleet of eleven Dash 8 Q400s. They use their strategic partnership with Lufthansa to sell codeshared tickets to Frankfurt. Besides business-focused flights, the Luxembourgish airline also serves popular holiday destinations in Europe, such as Faro in Portugal and North Africa with Djerba in Tunisia, using a Boeing 737-800s and 737-700s. It is the smallest airline, both in fleet and in network size, covered in this article.

Luxair plans to replace its aging fleet of Boeing narrowbodies in the coming years with 737 MAX jets and is the European launch customer of the 737 MAX 7 once the aircraft is certified.

LOT Polish Airlines

LOT Polish Airlines is one of the oldest airlines still operating today; they saw their first flight in January 1929. Today, some 95 years later, It still operates a diverse fleet of 75 total aircraft despite theretirement of its last turbopropin 2023. Unlike Luxair, LOT is a member of the Star Alliance. As such, they can operate codeshares with many other carriers worldwide, including Ethiopian Airlines and United Airlines.

LOT Polish Airlines also differs from Luxair in terms of the operation of long-haul flights. The Polish flag carrier has daily connections to Chicago, Miami, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles, and even Tokyo in Japan, and it uses a fleet of 8 Boeing 787-8s and seven 787-9s. The rest of the fleet is a mix of 737s and Embraer E-jets. Their European network includes destinations like Brussels, Bucharest, and London. They also serve an exciting destination in central Asia: Astana, Kazakhstan.

Here is an example of one of the E195s operated by the airline, featuring the beautiful "Visit North Moradia" livery.

Of all the airlines covered today, LOT Polish has the most diverse fleet and the farthest-reaching network of international destinations.

Croatia Airlines

As their name suggests, this other Star Alliance carrier is the flag carrier of Croatia, a popular tourist destination in the south of the continent, right by the Adriatic Sea. Much like their Luxembourgish counterpart, they are also considered a regional airline. This means that they operate short and medium-haul aircraft only.

Their fleet comprises six Dash 8 Q400s, four A319s, and two Airbus A320s. However, the airline is set to become asingle A220 operatorin the coming years. Their network primarily focuses on Europe, with their longest route serving Stockholm, Sweden, using the A320 family and their shortest route serving Split, Croatia, using the Dash 8s.

Bottom line

Readers wishing to join Miles&More and collect or redeem flights using the program have many airlines from which to choose. Of course, they can fly with the standard Lufthansa Group carriers mentioned at the beginning of this article, but they can also try out one of the three airlines above. Altogether, the network covers three continents: Europe, Africa, and Asia, with Istanbul served by Croatia Airlines. But thanks to a loophole using Miles&More, Luxair customers can also access redemptions across the Star Alliance network without being an allied airline.
