Thailand King’s estranged son returns home after 27 years

FOR the first time in 27 years, Vacharaesorn Vivacharawongse finally set foot in Thailand.

His unannounced return has surprised many and raised questions about a possible succession plan taking place.

Vivacharawongse who works at a law firm in New York made a low-key arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sunday.

The 42-year-old lawyer visited the Foundation for Slum Child Care which is supported by the Royal Family.

His visit comes at a difficult time for the Thai Royal Family, as King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s eldest daughter Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavat, who is the most possible heir, remains in a coma after she collapsed in December.

The Royal Palace and the Household Bureau declined to provide any comment on his visit.

Vivacharawongse thanked the public for giving him a warm welcome despite being away for a long time adding that it’s like a dream come true for him to be home again.

He is one of five children born to King Vajiralongkorn’s second wife Sujiranee, a former actress whom he divorced in 1996 and has lived abroad since then after being accused of adultery.

The King’s four estranged sons are widely believed to have been stripped of their royal status and have no place in the line of succession to the throne.
