Suburban Neighborhood in Knoxville, Tennessee
Knox County 37923, 37932
As a well-established neighborhood in west Knoxville, Tennessee dating back to the late 1800s, residents appreciate the settled-in vibe of Cedar Bluff. According to local lore, Cedar Bluff’s name has nothing to do with trees or natural bluffs. Instead, the name comes from a small quarry where cedar marble was mined, and a man-made bluff was slowly carved into a hillside. The road through what was then rolling farmland became known as Cedar Bluff Road.
Cedar Bluff is now a thriving community with tree-lined residential streets, bustling main thoroughfares, and easy access to Knoxville’s interstates and major highways.
Cedar Bluff homes include apartment complexes, sprawling ranch homes, traditional brick houses, split levels, and new construction. Lots sizes range from generous acreage to smaller plots in newer subdivisions. Prices in Cedar Bluff tend to be at or above Knoxville’s average home price, but there are outliers below the average for buyers willing to take on a fixer-upper and make it their own.
Cedar Bluff’s residential areas offer respite from the hustle and bustle of traffic, but there are still plenty of nearby grocery stores and restaurants. A major chain grocery store has locations on both the north and south ends of Cedar Bluff Road. Local restaurants offer American favorites and baked goods as well as Mexican and Asian cuisine. Chain restaurants and coffee shops are available where Cedar Bluff Road intersects Interstate 40 and where Cedar Bluff Road ends at Kingston Pike. There is also a large warehouse store just east of Cedar Bluff. Turkey Creek, Knoxville’s premier shopping destination, is less than 10 miles west of Cedar Bluff.
Cedar Bluff area residents have access to a complete, 18-hole golf course on Sherill Boulevard. There’s an indoor amusement center on South Cedar Bluff Road featuring arcade games, a ropes course, bowling, and several dining options.
Cedar Bluff has great parks, including Walker Springs Park along one of the city's greenways, and Plumb Creek Park — one of the county's newest recreational offerings.
Cedar Bluff is home to some of Knoxville’s most exclusive private schools and several public schools. Public school students begin their education journey at Cedar Bluff Elementary before continuing to Cedar Bluff Middle School. After completing eighth grade, most Cedar Bluff students are zoned to attend Hardin Valley Academy for high school. Hardin Valley Academy is one of the top-ranked schools in the district. It offers more than 30 AP classes, four career academies, and the chance to participate in dozens of extracurricular and athletic activities.
The Cedar Bluff area is the end of the line for Knoxville Area Transit service in west Knoxville. Sidewalk availability in Cedar Bluff varies. There are sidewalks along Cedar Bluff Road, Middlebrook Pike, Dutchtown Road, and other major streets, but very few of the residential streets have sidewalks. Buses running along route 16 have stops in the neighborhood and at the Parkwest Medical Center in the southwestern section of Cedar Bluff. Route 16 buses also service stops with connections to the Kingston Pike and Crosstown routes headed east towards downtown.
Traffic in Cedar Bluff can be heavy at peak times. Still, its location is excellent for those working for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory or the U.S. Department of Energy in Oak Ridge or at Tennessee Valley Authority facilities in Roane, Anderson, and Loudon counties. Cedar Bluff is bordered to the south by Interstate 40, the main east-west route across the city. Middlebrook Pike and Kingston Pike are the alternate east-west routes and intersect Cedar Bluff Road. Pellissippi Parkway borders Cedar Bluff to the west and provides quick access to McGhee Tyson Airport, which is under 20 miles away. Downtown Knoxville is less than 12 miles east of Cedar Bluff.
