Sports movies hold a special place in the early ‘90s Disney canon, from Double Teamed to Cool Runnings, and now lighthearted sports stories are getting revived on Disney+ in the form of live-action series. Classic hockey film The Mighty Ducks (1992) is one of the first to get the reboot treatment, but it likely won’t be the last. The 10-episode series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, will follow a new storyline in the Mighty Ducks universe, and will include Emilio Estevez in his original role as Gordon Bombay along with a new cast of characters.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers follows up on everyone’s favorite 90’s hockey team in the present day. The Mighty Ducks, formerly hockey underdogs, have transformed into an elite youth hockey team with a long line of hopefuls waiting to join. When Evan (Brady Noon) gets cut from the team, he and his mother Alex (Lauren Graham) set out to form their own team, enlisting the help of former Mighty Ducks team member Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez). The series also includes young actors like Maxwell Simkins, Swayam Bhatia, Luke Islam, Kiefer O’Reilly, Taegen Burns, Bella Higginbotham, and DJ Watts.

Emilio Estevez is executive producer of the series with Lauren Graham as co-executive producer. The original The Mighty Ducks film, starring Estevez, is available to view on Disney+, along with the two Mighty Ducks sequels, D2: The Mighty Ducks and D3: The Mighty Ducks. The new series is streaming on Disney+ and will be available exclusively on the service.
