WUSSTEST DU SCHON:
- WissenswertesThe real submarine captain that Clark Gable's character was based on, Captain Edward L. Beach, was only 23 years old at the time of the events depicted. Edward L. Beach Jr. wrote the book "Run Silent, Run Deep" (1955) as a work of fiction. While without doubt similarities exist between Commander Richardson (Gable) and Beach as a submarine captains, the same can be said of Richardson and all USN submarine captains of that era. But to say that the Richardson character is "based" on Beach is a stretch, especially when one considers that the movie is only very loosely based on the book. BTW, Beach also penned a great non-fiction book - an excellent read - "Salt and Steel" (1999), his reflections on being a submariner.
- PatzerIn the opening scene of the film, Gable's sub is located off the Bungo Strait, near the coast of Japan, in 1942. After his sub is sunk, the survivors are shown floating in the water, the movie goes to opening credits, and the next scene is of Gable sitting in his office at Pearl Harbor. One must assume that they were rescued by friendly vessels and returned home. In fact, any sub sunk that close to Japan at that time would have never been within rescue range of an American surface ship to be picked up. American surface ships would have been sitting ducks for the home waters defense forces of Japan. The US surface Navy only got into that area much later in the war, in spring of 1945 or so, after the Japanese navy and air force had been effectively neutralized. Even another sub would have found it difficult to rescue the crew before they were picked up and sent to a POW camp. In short, this opening sequence is bogus in terms of reality, but needed as a plot line for the rest of the movie.

[last lines]
Lt. Jim Bledsoe: [presiding at a funeral on his submarine] It's thirty-eight days now since we left Pearl Harbor. I know how some of us felt then; I think I know how some of us feel now. But let no one here, no one aboard this boat, ever say we didn't have a captain.
[as the body is buried at sea, he reads these remarks]
Lt. Jim Bledsoe: Unto almighty God we commend the soul of our shipmate departed. And we commit his body to the deep, in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection unto eternal life, when the sea shall give up her dead in the life of the world to come.
- Crazy CreditsNot sure why Bungo Straits is cited as a crazy credit. The Bungo Suido (translates to Bungo Straits) is the waterway between Kyushu and Shikoku.
- VerbindungenEdited into Spisok korabley (2008)
It is filmed in black and white, which is (possibly) a salute to the "Victory at Sea" series of a few years before, but this film would not work as well in color (in contrast with "Das Boot," which would not work as well in black and white). Like "Das Boot," the sets are realistic and give the viewer an intimate feeling of the claustrophobia that existed on these small subs.
The script is excellent, although I have one recommendation: Try to watch this film in a "closed caption" mode. I hear fine, but when I watched it a second time in closed captioned, I picked up even more, particularly the names of the crew.
Gable and Lancaster are a little too old for the roles they are playing. But, this is a small complaint in comparison to their remarkable performances. It's easy to think of Gable as "Rhett Butler," no more and no less, but this film illustrates what a very fine actor he was. Lancaster is excellent, and gives a preview of his Oscar-winning turn in "Elmer Gantry," just a year or two later.
This is an old-fashioned film made with the able assistance of the U.S. Navy, and one cannot help but feeling a little pride in our nation and gratitude for our brave WW II veterans, after watching it. Highly recommended.
