The Climate Emergency threatens human civilization. All life forms on the planet depend now on humanity to undo the harm it has done. Unfortunately, those who have been leading the charge to address climate change, such as Al Gore, have not been telling us the whole truth. They have continued to ignore its leading cause. Food Is Climate gives us hope that the crisis can be addressed--in a way that will improve human health--but only if there's a grassroots movement to do the right thing, because clearly politicians and even environmental organizations have refused to lead.
"
Climate change is real, it’s here now, it’s getting worse very fast, and the consequences if we don’t fully address it are certain to be utterly catastrophic. People like Al Gore, Bill Gates, and Paul Hawken see how terribly dangerous our situation is, but their proposals fall seriously short of what’s needed if we are to have a viable future. And that’s what makes this stunning and highly readable book by Glen Merzer so incredibly important. There are in fact steps we could take that would defeat climate change and save our world, and Glen makes it clear exactly what they are. This book is an extraordinary antidote to the hopelessness that many of us feel. But more importantly, it may very well present us with the heretofore missing key to solving what is probably the greatest problem ever to confront humanity."—John Robbins, best-selling author and President, Food Revolution Network
"
A very readable story of man's impact on climate, seeing through the 'clean energy' mantra that has most of us mesmerised. This story is how cutting down trees, degrading land, stripping the seas of their natural climate defence, has destroyed the natural world and climate, and how our ravenous appetites, particularly for red meat and dairy, are killing the systems that keep us alive. Merzer reveals how the work of Al Gore and others have misled us with a narrative that is blind to the real changes that are needed, and shows us the transformational power of trees, soils, and removing livestock. I strongly believe Merzer is right, and we need to get behind these ideas."—Gerard Wedderburn-Bisshop, Former Principal Scientist, Queensland Government Natural Resources, Australia; Lead Scientist and Founder, World Preservation Foundation
"Food Is Climate
is the only book in the world that discloses the complete truth about the relationship — and the timeline of discovery — between humans eating animals, climate change and our steadily declining chances for surviving much longer as a species. It shines a bright, embarrassing light on Al Gore, one of the few globally-recognized leaders who understand the complete truth about climate change — but lacks the courage to share that crucial knowledge with the public. Maybe this book will help to shame him into taking a global stand on the most crucial topic in the history of humanity. Leveraging his global fame and wealth, he could make a real difference by loudly, and urgently, sharing the truth with the public about the paramount importance of a rapid shift to plant-based eating throughout the world."— J. Morris Hicks, author of Healthy Eating, Healthy World and OUTCRY, Urgent Alarms from Our Planet and What We Can Do About Them
"Glen Merzer has that unique ability to tackle tough issues with humor and wisdom. If I could sum up this book in one word, it would be INCONTROVERTIBLE!”
— Shaun Monson (writer/director, EARTHLINGS and UNITY)

Glen Merzer's book speaks the really inconvenient truth to power: animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change, habitat destruction, human world hunger, and preventable human disease. The Powers-that-Be need to read it now. We are headed toward a climate apocalypse if we don't look at this issue.—Jane Velez-Mitchell, NY Times bestselling author/journalist

STOP ignoring the COW in the room - Animal Slaughter Farming is Burning the Planet. Go VEGAN
Glen does an amazing job in exposing the extreme waste and cruelty to our Environment by the extremely racist Animal Slaughter industry.IPCC report is calling for a CODE RED and demanding a complete TRANSFORMATION of our ways in the next 5 years if we are to have any hope in warding off Climate Catastrophe (1.5C temperature increase, 2 meters sea level rise). One thing which each one of us can do today to address this climate urgency is to say YES to plant-based foods and NO to Animal Slaughter products and Animal Secretions. By going Vegan, you practice compassion to Animals, who are Sentient Beings and feel pain, in addition to dramatically reducing one's Carbon footprint. Our Actions speak louder than our words. Go VeganThe book is an easy read with extensive references and delicious recipes. A must read!!!

Excluding the excellent recipes at the back of the book, this is just 59 pages long and is possibly the most important 59 pages any person can read if they care about building a sustainable future for themselves, friends and family.

Merzer brilliantly addresses (and dispels) the myths about climate change and environmental degradation that have sadly become the "collective wisdom" and upon which our leaders and erroneously basing their strategies to fight climate change. Simply put he explains why the only hope we have to reverse climate change and move toward a sustainable future on planet Earth is by changing the way humanity eats and reverting back to a diet of plant-based foods.

Forget the rhetoric, forget the emotion, forget the politics, forget the ethics-based arguments, forget most of what you ever thought you knew about climate change. Merzer's book explains in simple to understand examples and with science and basic math why humanity needs to rethink it's reliance on raising and eating animals. This book should be a "must read" for everyone...it's message is that important.

Concise, factual, and hard-hitting, this book is a must for anyone who considers the climate crisis important. While the government, companies and media would have you believe the solution is all about spending more money on greener technologies, there is a much easier solution that requires but a single change in our daily habits. Switching from a meat-based diet to a plant-based one in large enough numbers would not only eliminate the 30-40% of methane emissions created by farmed animals, but it would also free up nearly 40% of our habitable land to make room for more biodiverse multi-layer forests. This is literally the only approach anyone has suggested that might slow down climate change sufficiently to prevent us from hitting the 1.5C mark that will start triggering tipping points such as the melting of the arctic permafrost. The details are derived in part from analysis done by Dr. Sailesh Rao, but the text makes the science far easier to digest and more persuasive in it's ability to expose the ridiculous system we've built for what it is. A world that caters to breeding baby animals by the billions is not one that can persist if we want to see our own retirements. Whatever we use to replace this approach, be it cultured meat, plant based diets, or some combination thereof, we have no choice but to end animal agriculture as quickly and effienctly as we can.

Finally, someone courageous enough to speak and write the truth about perpetrators of climate change, and that is the animal agriculture industry. Al Gore, Bill Gates, and others have addressed the climate crisis, but no one has uttered the words - 'animal agriculture'! Don't have to say WHY. Big corporate entities often muzzle the truth. As Merzer skillfully writes....... A myriad of windmills and solar panels can be installed throughout the world, but that won't halt the accumulation of methane gas from factory farms. Merzer's study, insight, and compassion is a clarion call for folks to rethink food. How are our food choices impacting climate change? What are we willing to do to preserve our beautiful Mother Earth for future generations? Animal agriculture is the culprit, not only for the health of our planet, but our own personal health as well. Merzer clearly shows that if the world transitioned to a plant based diet, not only could we reverse global warming, but the health of mankind would be greatly positively impacted. For one thing, folks would be armed with stronger immune systems that could better fight not only the Covid pandemic, but those sure to follow. What we're choosing to eat has an impact on the health of our planet, its sustainability, and our own personal health. Going plant based is right medicine! I strongly recommend reading this important work, and buying multiple copies for family and friends for the holidays. Our planet's sustainability depends on taking positive action. Absorbing Merzer's compelling work is a start!

Kudos to Glen Merzer for writing a timely, crucially-important book that exposes the fact that animal agriculture is a HUGE contributor to the climate crisis. So many environmentalists, policy-makers, and others focus narrowly on emissions from fossil fuels, ignorant to the fact that even a reduction of fossil fuel emissions to zero will not allow us to avert complete climate catastrophe unless accompanied by a shift in diets. The EAT-Lancet Commission and many studies published in peer-reviewed journals make this fact clear.

What Glen Merzer does with Food is Climate is make this science accessible to people who may not be reading scientific journals. The book is a quick read and packed with important basic information that will hopefully motivate readers to adopt sustainable plant-based diets or at least move in that direction.

The book even provides many recipes to support people in making the shift. I was truly impressed that Merzer tapped whole food chefs to contribute recipes. So often people offer quick vegan recipes that might be better for the Earth and better for the animals but not so kind to the health of the human animal consuming the food. People following the recipes in Food is Climate can make food that is good for the them, good for the Earth, and good for all Lifekind!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Important Book of the 21st Century
Reviewed in Canada on December 9, 2021
The title of this review is a quote by Dr. Michael Klaper, a clinician, educator, and speaker on plant based nutrition. That quote and an interview he did with Glen Merzer inspired me to buy this book. The idea that animal agriculture is having a massive impact on our planet and that barely anyone was talking about it is mind-boggling. What seems so obvious is not only being ignored, it is blatantly being hidden and discredited by the people who benefit most. What do we do? Well, Glen has thankfully written a very clear and concise book which explains there is something we can do, stop eating animals and start planting trees! In this book you will learn about people and organizations who are leading the way, like Sailesh Rao's Climate Healers and Trillion Trees. As humans we are so capable when we are motivated and this book is a great way to ignite our passion for saving the earth and ourselves. The bonus is how affordably priced it is - buy one for yourself and another for a friend.

I found this to be an amazing resource as I build my own knowledge base on the climate crisis and the exacerbation resulting from animal agriculture. It's an easy read and full of digestible pieces of information and I read it start to finish on a train from Scotland to London. Oh...and I didn't realize there were vegan recipes in the back of the book. Bonus!

5.0 out of 5 stars There’s more to diet than losing weight.
Reviewed in Germany on September 16, 2021
“Climate is Food” is an absorbing exposè on what Glen Merzer shows to be the major cause of climate change. We can try to save the planet externally - by using public transportation, electric cars, renewable energy, etc. But ultimately, we must do it internally - by greatly cutting back on the consumption of animal products. “…and if enough people do so,” Merzer argues, “the stance of politicians may change, and the economics of animal food production may change. That is our last best hope.”
It amazes me that in our dire climate situation, Glen Merzer is optimistic. If enough people can be convinced to conserve internally, our planet can be saved.
“This is a battle for the future of life on the planet as we know it, and it’s a battle between livestock and humans. And we’re in charge of the livestock. So that part of the equation shouldn’t be difficult at all. We merely have to get rid of the livestock. And not by eating them. By ending the practice of breeding them.”
“Climate is Food” is concise and eloquent. Yet its message is powerful and timely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Changing What We Eat Will Heal the Planet
Reviewed in Canada on December 12, 2022
This book is a rallying cry for us to change what we eat in order to avert a climate disaster. While most climate activists focus on fossil fuels, Glen Merzer argues that we need to reduce or eliminate the greenhouse gas emissions from intensive animal agriculture that result in deforestation, air & water pollution and food inequity worldwide. Go vegan to heal the planet!

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to identify with that book...
Reviewed in Germany on August 19, 2021
The author may be right on his core findings, but some parts of the book sound kind of exaggerated to me(e.g. I'd like to know which "endotoxins" are in a steak). Also, the author uses unnecessary harsh wording (like before every "animal", there must always be a "dead"), making it unpleasant to read and hard to identify with the whole thing. I would have found something more realistic, less polarizing more helpful.
