The Blade Runner 2099 series is moving forward with a major star leading the cast. Michelle Yeoh, who's now an Oscar winner thanks to Everything Everywhere All at Once, has officially joined Blade Runner 2099.

Per Deadline, Yeoh has been cast for a mystery role in Blade Runner 2099, a limited series that will serve as the follow-up to the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049. No details have yet been divulged about the plot of the series, nor is there any information shared about the role Yeoh will play. No other cast members have been officially announced.

Showrunner Silka Luisa will executive produce the series with Ridley Scott, who directed the original Blade Runner from 1982 and exec produced 2017's Blade Runner 2049. Also executive producing Blade Runner 2099 are Alcon Entertainment's Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, and Ben Roberts; Scott Free Productions' David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger; and Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, Isa Dick Hackett, and Jonathan van Tulletken, the director of the first two episodes.

The Blade Runner franchise is derived from the original Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Director Ridley Scott's Blade Runner film was written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples, and it featured a strong cast including Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos. It has since become regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made.

A sequel, Blade Runner 2049, was released in 2017 by Dune helmer Denis Villeneuve. Ford returned to join Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, and Jared Leto. The franchise was also expanded upon with an animated series, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, which aired from 2021 to 2022 between Crunchyroll and Adult Swim.

Michelle Yeoh Lands Her Next Big Role

Michelle Yeoh made history by becoming the first Asian performer to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, which was one of many major honors garnered with her role in the hit A24 film Everything Everywhere All at Once. Yeoh has several other upcoming projects for fans to look forward to beyond her new casting in Blade Runner 2099. She will star in Alex Kurtzman's Star Trek: Section 31, reprising her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery. Yeoh also has a key role in the upcoming Wicked adaptation from director Jon M. Chu.

Blade Runner 2099 doesn't yet have a premiere date set at Prime Video.
