Shahrzad (Shery) Mokhtare is proud to be a member of Circle Medical, a digital-first, patient-focused experience that makes quality care more accessible than ever. Tell us what makes you passionate about being a healthcare provider. Family medicine allows me to provide thorough care for patients of all ages, accompanying them throughout their health journeys. This involves developing relationships, understanding their individual medical requirements, and collaboratively working towards long-term health outcomes. It's about commitment and dedication, ensuring their wellness is prioritized every step of the way. In your opinion, what should be the role of a primary care provider for a patient, taking into account both physical health and behavioral health needs? In my opinion, a primary care provider should serve as a central point of contact for a patient's overall health, addressing both physical and behavioral health needs comprehensively. This entails not only diagnosing and treating medical conditions but also offering support, guidance, and referrals for mental health concerns. By integrating physical and behavioral health care, primary care providers can promote well-being and empower patients to lead healthier lives. Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you like to do in your spare time? During my downtime, I find fulfillment in a variety of activities. Hiking with my son and dogs not only keeps me active but allows us to spend time in nature. Winters I spend my time skiing and summers, I seek out water activities.

"I booked with a female GP so you can imagine my surprise when a male dermatologist showed up. To also clarify they called me morning of to tell me my doctor wouldn’t be available at the original scheduled time (that I scheduled a week prior) as she had a meeting pop up. They then asked me to move the appt to accommodate her. We even moved it virtual. When it came time for the appointment, I received a phone call for the virtual appt and it was a male dermatologist that showed up. I was specifically looking for a female GP and already have a dermatologist so i was quite disappointed. I also wasn’t able to communicate the other issues I was having as I didn’t feel comfortable having those conversations with a dermatologist. The dermatologist also took another call in the middle of our appointment for 5 minutes and left me there. In the middle of the appointment on FaceTime he said « I need to take this I’ll call you back ». Overall wasn’t the experience I was expecting."

"Overall this was a pretty productive doctor's appointment, I felt very heard and while she ran through things quickly she made sure to take the time to explain everything in depth. I also felt her knowledge of my medical conditions was a lot more up-to-date than previous doctors were which I find incredibly invaluable. I went through many physicians who overlooked one of my conditions, however, she felt very keen on understanding everything. The staff was super friendly and very welcoming, they also booked my next appointment with ease and all the online forms you fill out are good to go upon check-in. my only complaint is that to handle outside situations such as psychiatry I was given no referrals, however, I understand this may just be something outside her control, as she did take the time to talk me through everything."

I am passionate about helping people and making a positive difference in their lives. I am able to create a personal lasting relationship and use that to provide the help and guidance they need. Using these personal relationships I can tailor treatment plans to them, inspire them and educate them on their health and wellbeing. The role of a primary care physician is to provide preventative care, help maintain a healthy lifestyle and most importantly advocate for the patient. Primary care physicians also treat a variety of medical illnesses and provide guidance so that the patient can receive the best possible care for their ailments. What is primary care?

Primary care refers to the day-to-day healthcare provided by doctors and physicians. It is the primary or first point of contact between a patient and a medical professional with access to information and resources they might need for better health outcomes.

Primary healthcare doctors usually have a broad range of knowledge about various illnesses. They also understand the intersection between physical, psychological, social, and behavioral aspects of life.

Primary care aims to improve people's quality of life by providing accessible and integrated medical care. Doctors' services are person-centric, meaning they focus on the individual rather than the disease of a specific organ in the body.

Receiving primary care can improve the patient's overall health and well-being as your doctor will try to prevent or treat health problems that may be present or possible in the future.

The World Health Organization lists the key roles of primary care practitioners as follows:

  • Addressing determinants of health through multisectoral policies
  • Preventing social discrimination in medical care
  • Contributing to health services to improve public health
  • Conducting sessions to train leaders in healthcare
  • Actively engaging in public policy and the inclusion of healthcare

Who is a primary care doctor?

Before booking an appointment with a general practitioner near you, it is essential to know how and who they can help. A primary care doctor is trained to diagnose, prevent, and treat a wide range of disorders and conditions common to the general population. Their services are not limited to age, sex, organ, or body diseases. They provide comprehensive care in treating acute and chronic diseases as well as complex health issues. For example, they may prescribe medications to treat colds and flu and also design treatment plans to treat long-term conditions like diabetes mellitus.

Primary care doctors also work closely with other medical professionals to treat complex issues. For instance, a person with chronic muscle pain may need assistance with physical therapy and mental health counseling. A primary care doctor will collaborate with a mental health practitioner, like a psychologist or psychotherapist, to fulfill this requirement.

Based on their interests or specializations, primary care doctors work in various settings, including private offices, hospitals, medical schools, medical organizations, schools, or the armed forces.

These are the day-to-day responsibilities of a primary care doctor:

  • Provide pain relief through management or physical therapy
  • Prescribe oral medications to treat illnesses
  • Perform lab and medical tests to diagnose and assess health issues
  • Conduct spirometry tests to evaluate lung function
  • Treat injuries or wounds caused by intense physical activity or accidents
  • Conduct preliminary tests to evaluate fractures or broken bones
  • Provide screenings for complex conditions such as cancer
  • Provide referrals to specialists and other medical resources

The importance of consulting a primary care doctor

Primary care providers handle everyday health and medical needs. Developing a long-lasting relationship with your doctor will keep you healthy and free of concerns while reducing your medical expenses. Primary care doctors will advise you on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, guide you toward the right diet and food habits, treat you for any medical issues, and offer advanced care for complex conditions. Finding the right primary care doctor may take time, but it is worth the investment to improve your overall health and quality of life.

Once you find a primary care doctor, you should stay with the same doctor for an extended timeframe. With this sustained relationship, doctors develop a deeper understanding of your medical needs and expectations. This allows them to create a baseline for your well-being. They get to know you and your family history better, providing the ideal management plan.

A primary care doctor is also responsible for screening all major and chronic health conditions. If you already suffer from a disease, they will provide care to manage or treat it. They screen for obesity, high blood pressure, unstable diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. They can help with immunization refills by examining your records. If you need immediate medical advice, you can consult your primary care doctor instead of visiting the emergency department.

In hospitals, primary care providers are usually part of a high-standard team that can meet your exact criteria. The team usually comprises physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, specialists, patient access staff, and patient care associates. So, to receive individualized care, you must find a good primary care doctor to consult when needed.

Educational qualifications of a primary care doctor

To become a primary care doctor, one should first earn an undergraduate degree by studying biology, chemistry, general health, mathematics, etc. After this, students must take the Medical College Admissions Test or MCAT. Along with the test, they submit letters of recommendation and undergo an interview. On successfully getting through the admission process, students attend four years of medical college. These four years include theoretical knowledge as well as laboratory experience. After medical school, students must do a residency for at least three years. Following the residency, doctors can also choose to attend a fellowship program. Before practicing as a doctor, they need to gain certification from the board by successfully taking the certification exams from the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association.

What are the different subspecialties of primary care doctors?

If you are seeking medical care from a primary care doctor, you will come across a variety of healthcare providers, each specializing in different aspects of primary care. From diagnosis to treatment, these doctors are your first point of contact with medical care. Before you head to a general practitioner near you, it is helpful for you to be aware of the kinds of specialties they can provide you. Knowing the specialization of the doctor you're visiting allows you to streamline your efforts while choosing a primary care doctor. Here are some of the different types of primary care doctors:

  • Family Medicine: Family medicine practitioners provide care for patients of all ages. They also function in various settings, including comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care. They also offer home care and nursing home care.
  • Pediatrics: Pediatricians are doctors who specialize in treating children and their ailments. They provide preventive guidance, diagnosis, and treatment for children.
  • Nurse practitioners: Nurse practitioners provide primary care while working under a primary care physician. They help reach an area's grassroots level, spread awareness about medical issues, and guide people toward proper healthcare practices.
  • Geriatrics: Geriatric care is for the elderly population of an area. Geriatric doctors receive training in treating and offering guidance to older people suffering from medical issues that manifest differently in their bodies.

How to find a qualified primary care doctor in Beverly Hills, California?

While looking for a trustworthy general practitioner near you might seem difficult, it's essential to maintaining good overall health. Under a primary care doctor, you receive longitudinal care and gain familiarity along the way, which will benefit you in many ways.

For instance, if your doctor already knows about your diabetic history, they may screen and treat you for other related conditions before your health starts deteriorating. The most crucial step in this is to find an experienced doctor you feel comfortable with. This is precisely where Zocdoc can help you.

Begin by registering yourself for free on the Zocdoc website. Then, you will find a search box on the homepage. Enter your symptoms, condition, location, date, and specialty to find someone who meets all the points. Further, Zocdoc also lets you search using your insurance carrier and plan so that you don't have to worry about paying an exorbitant amount. This way, you can find a doctor who accepts your health insurance plan, avoiding any detours.

Once you hit search, you will find a comprehensive list of all the primary healthcare providers in and around your locality. Zocdoc lets you click on each doctor's profile, which contains details such as educational background, areas of expertise, types of appointments they provide (in-person or online), languages they speak, gender, and so on.
