"Suspense and mystery within an absorbing love story. Readers will be hard put to set this one down before the end."Library Journal, starred review

Winner of the 2020 HOLT Medallion

An Uncommon Beauty…

Hidden away in rural Devonshire, Phyllida Satterthwaite has always been considered more odd than beautiful. But in London, her oddity has made her a sensation. Far worse, it’s caught the eye of the sinister Duke of Moreland—a notorious art collector obsessed with acquiring one-of-a-kind treasures. To escape the duke’s clutches, she’s going to need a little help.

An Unlikely Hero…

Captain Arthur Heywood’s days of heroism are long past. Grievously injured in the Peninsular War, he can no longer walk unaided, let alone shoot a pistol. What use can he possibly be to a damsel in distress? He has nothing left to offer except his good name.

Can a marriage of convenience save Philly from the vengeful duke? Or will life with Arthur put her—and her heart—in more danger than ever?

"I don't compare you with anyone, Philly."She looked up at him, startled by his vehemence."Since the day I met you, I haven't even thought of another woman. Indeed, I've been hard pressed to think of anything else at all."What can I say about this book? Perfection. I first read Mimi Matthews' Belles of London series and I knew I'd eventually have to read more of her works because I was in love with that series. So I headed over to the Somerset Stories first in anticipation for Appointment in Bath coming out in late June. Needless to say, I consumed the first three books in a few days.Arthur and Philly were everything my heart needed. Philly has a tendency to gravitate towards broken and wounded animals, Arthur included. Philly is an outsider looking for kindness and Arthur is the grump unknowingly, at first, to provide it. Theirs is a marriage of convenience and while the romance is swoony, there is a mystery to be solved as well. The title Work of Art is a nod to a name given to Philly because she has heterochromia with one blue eye and one amber eye. She is unique and her beauty is valued. I identified with Philly as a heroine. She is driven, strong and loving personality, but also having central heterochromia myself I adored that detail about her eyes. This book made me swoon, gasp, laugh, tear up and smile. Mimi sets the scene where the details draw you in and then keep you there with beautiful story telling. The detail in her historical research is something I love and come to depend on when I read her works. If you're looking for a clean historical romance that will make you feel all of the things, this is the book for you.

The Work of Art is a sweet romance featuring Phyllida Satterthwaite, an orphan completely dependent on her uncle who intends to have her marry a heartless London art collector, and Captain Heywood, a man scared by the effects of the Peninsular War who though love was no longer a possibility for himself.

When Phyllida realizes the future her uncle has in mind for her, she becomes desperate, and it is Captain Heywood who comes to the rescue helping her in the most difficult moment of her live.

Mimi Matthews is an incredible story teller and in the Work of Art that was visible with the easiness with which the reader is pulled into the story. The writing style is very engaging and fluid and I didn’t want to stop reading this book.

The pacing is also perfect with a slow and sweet friendship being developed with a mixture of new and exciting events taking place at the same time. Every time the story needed a new element to keep it interesting, Mimi Matthews delivered a new twist. With that, she created a multifaceted and remarkable storyline that never failed to engage the reader. I never expected the story to take so many turns and for so many aspects to be approached. The characters had a background that gave them depth and that allowed them to establish a beautiful bond based on love, understanding and devotion.

Captain Arthur Heywood was just the type of hero I love! He is damaged and brooding, but caring and loving with and exceptional integrity. He was such a hero for Phyllida in so many different moments, and he went to the extreme of his abilities to make her feel loved and safe. He was definitely the selling aspect of this book for me. He is swoon worthy!

Phyllida is not the typical heroine I see in regency romances, but I loved her devotion and openness that contributed to the development of a beautiful relationship that felt real and unique. Phyllida’s mature approach helped to mend Arthur, and his strength of feeling helped Phyllida feel safe and at home. I loved how their relationship was built and how it slowly grew into a deep affection.

The antagonists were my least favourite characters in the story, and I was especially surprised with the events at the end of the book. While I loved the impact those events had in Captain Heywood’s character, I felt the antagonist motivations were somewhat exaggerated.

Summing up, the Work of Art is a brilliantly executed regency romance that I cannot praise enough. I highly recommend it.

It's becoming harder and harder to find really good freshly-written HRs. A shame, because HRs are my chosen escape-from-reality read, something I'm needing more and more lately whenever I crawl out from under that rock where I've been hiding to escape the never-ending depressing news cycles. So hallelujah, and thanks, Ms Matthews. For a brief moment I was lost in the world of a delightful Regency romance, with really charming main characters and a heartwarming romance.

The plot is not anything new. Lovely innocent young woman from Devonshire, alone in the world after the death of her grandparents, is brought to London by distant and unaffectionate relatives who are hoping to get her married off ASAP. She is uncomfortable with their choice, an older, cold, and uncharismatic duke known as The Collector because of his obsession with acquiring unique treasures. And our heroine Phyllida is just such a unique treasure. She's lovely. But more than that she's heterochromatic, with one blue eye and one amber. She has been given the nickname The Work of Art because of this and the duke is set on her for his new wife. And her relatives are looking forward to the money they will receive for this marriage transaction.

Then we have our hero, Captain Arthur Heywood. He's a Peninsular War hero, wounded so badly that he can no longer walk without a cane, is never free of pain and suffers from PTSD. He's almost a recluse but has been forced to London by his father to check out a possible business investment with Phyllida's uncle. So he and Phylly meet and become friends. I'll not say more about this because it pretty much goes along as you would expect with perhaps only a few surprises.

The plot's not really the thing, anyway. It's the romance. It's the truly appealing hero and heroine. It's the way their friendship develops into love. These two characters were perhaps too good to be true, but I needed to meet some really good people at the moment, even if they were fictional. And they are perfect for each other. Phylly is a kindhearted country girl at heart. She's not fond of the social life in London. Arthur, especially since his injuries, is not interested in the city and its social life either.

Phylly has a compassionate heart. She can't stand by if she sees a way to give help or support in any way, as is evidenced by her motley crew of dogs who came to London with her, most formerly abused, one with only three legs. Captain Heywood is an honorable man, albeit a reticent, reclusive one. So I sat back, Kindle in hand, to see how these two would deal with each other. Both need a rescue. Phylly from her unkind family and that unwanted marriage, and Arthur needs healing to feel like a whole man, in spite of the limitations of his injuries. To take a line from the movie Jerry Maguire, these two complete each other. And they communicate. Yes, there is actual communication. There are misunderstandings but author Matthews doesn't allow these to fester. They are almost immediately addressed in conversations. Nicely done!

I can't quite say that this is a 5-star book. I did not appreciate the heroine's TSTL moment near the end. It was necessary, I suppose, so that the hero could do what he did to remedy the situation. But still...I'm not fond of TSTL actions. Nonetheless, this is a great little romance and hit the spot for me.

As soon as I opened the book, I was convinced I knew exactly how the story was going to play out.  I was right, but I was, also, wrong.  Although it didn't keep me on the edge of my seat, it always held my interest.  The author tweaked the plot so often with unexpected happenings that I was always wondering what was going to happen next. The development of all the characters was on point. By the end of the book, you knew exactly why they were the way they were.

Review:

I had never heard of Mimi’s work before and bumped into this book by chance. Since it was a freebie (go check, maybe it still is), I decided to get it. Best decision!

Mimi’s writing is so enchanting that she transformed what, at first glance was not a story with lots of things going on and made a heck of an amazing book. She even made me enjoy a closed door romance!

The highlight most definitely is the main couple. I fell in love equally with both Philly and Arthur. They are the kind of characters you want to hug and not let ever something bad happen to them!

I’m not an expert on historical romances, to be honest I’ve read very few, but this one is definitely my favorite and I already have two more books in this series ready for me to read. I 100% recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful historical romance
Reviewed in Spain on August 30, 2020
Absolutely loved it. One of of the best historical romance I've read.

I really enjoyed the world building. We start meeting Arthur and Philly on their own lives and how they are dealing with their reality.

It’s great how these two characters understand each other so well and without even realizing it, they start falling in love. Something happens and a quick decision has to be made.

Philly is sweet, pretty, nice, polite and extremely good hearted while Arthur is lonely, has no patience and has lost faith in him, his recovery and the rest of human beings. But everyting starts to change when he meets Philly.

This couple and how they become one so lovely and dearly got me almost sleepless two nights since I couldn't stop reading. Wonderfully written, I've loved every word of this story.

I just wish the steam level was a bit higher. After some kisses the scenes fades to black and I'd really had liked to read a little more. Not necessarily explicit but some more details would have been appreciated.
