Best Times To Visit Sonoma

The best time to visit Sonoma is between June and October when the weather is at its finest, with high temps hovering in the mid-80s in June and the upper 70s in October. Unfortunately, this time of year is also when the crowds are the thickest and hotel rates are at their highest. But the good thing is that wineries are open year-round, with the exception of major holidays. For thinner crowds and lower prices, travelers should book their trip between the months of November and May.

June-October

The five-month stretch between June and October is considered peak season in Sonoma, with harvest time in September and October seeing the most tourists. Unfortunately, this time of year is also the most expensive, with weekend hotel rates costing an average of $230 a night. To ensure availability, you'll need to book your accommodations and wine tasting reservations several months in advance of your trip. Still, this golden timespan sees sun-drenched days with average high temperatures reaching 87 degrees in July, the region's warmest month, and average lows dipping to 47 degrees in October.

November-May

The winter and spring months of November through May constitute Sonoma's offseason. Average lows this time of year hover between the upper 30s and upper 40s, while average highs drift into the 70s. But if travelers don't mind brisk temperatures – and sipping vino by a cozy fire – then these months could be a perfect time to visit Sonoma since both tourist crowds and accommodation prices are lower this time of year. Average nightly rates dip to less than $140 a night from December through March, but quickly start their peak season ascent in May, when rooms cost $200 or more per night.
